Maxim frowned at the sudden shift in her tone. Marien offered him an elegant smile.

“Etiquette isn’t something one side can manage alone.”

“Ugh.”

He clenched his fist, and Jan’s eyes widened until they seemed ready to pop out of their sockets. Even Florian’s corpse-like face showed astonishment.

“How can things possibly be worse than before I organized them? Are you seriously telling me you didn’t do this on purpose? That you weren’t trying to make a fool of me? Then there’s only one possibility left—you’re an irredeemable idiot.”

The documents she and Christoph had carefully sorted by case yesterday were now hopelessly jumbled again.

“What exactly did I do wrong? I pulled my hair out organizing everything, and not only do I not get a thank-you, but now I’m called an irredeemable idiot?”

Maxim shot up from his seat, his eyes blazing furiously. Jan pretended to pick up a dropped pen and ducked under the desk.

Maxim’s voice, thick with resentment, shook the office.

“So now that you’ve graduated from the Royal University, you think you can act superior in front of me? Just because you can read a few letters? Damn it all!”

“When did I ever act superior? This is about basic decency…”

“Alright, that’s enough.”

Nicholas, who had been watching them, stepped forward to mediate. Maxim glared at her with bulging eyes, his face flushed crimson as if about to burst.

“Sorry I can’t even manage the basics!”

Maxim kicked the desk violently and stormed out of the office. Florian grabbed both men’s hats and hurried after him, then suddenly turned back.
