Christoph paused briefly, then placed both hands on the desk and leaned his upper body toward her. His impenetrably dark eyes suddenly drew closer.

Marien instinctively flinched, her shoulders tensing. Noticing this, he subtly tugged at the corner of his mouth.

“Was your commute lonely?”

“Christoph.”

At her call, he responded not with words but by raising an eyebrow once again. She took a deep breath, then pointed with her finger to the stack of documents piled on the desk.

“Filing is the rookie’s job, Christoph.”

“…….”

He stared at Marien with a look of genuine confusion. She deliberately adopted a confident expression and patted Christoph’s shoulder.

“Since you came in after me, you’re my junior. Just sort the documents by case and by date. It’s not that difficult—someone as sharp as you should manage it easily. I’ll step out for some fresh air, so good luck.”

Marien stood up from her seat. Just before leaving the office, she halted and turned her head. Christoph was frowning, staring at the mountain of paperwork.

“Oh, reading through the case reports might help you get a handle on things.”

With that, Marien strode off briskly. She finally understood why Jan always put on such airs whenever he saw her.

“It must be nice being the senior.”

Swallowing a laugh that threatened to escape, Marien sat down on a bench near the police station entrance and stretched. Closing her eyes and tilting her head back, she felt the warm spring sunlight pour over her cheeks like a gentle rain.

It was a pleasant day. The sun was mild, the breeze refreshing. She could even sense a faint, briny tang in the air. Vividly, she recalled the deep blue sea she’d seen with Christoph.
