Maxim chided her with a mocking tone. Marien hurried her steps, wishing it really were just a case of embezzlement. The persistent gaze made the back of her neck prickle.
“Am I imagining things? It feels like that person is glaring at me.”

Marien pretended not to hear Maxim’s grumbling and kept walking straight ahead. Right now, she had something far more important to deal with.
This was her first case on duty. Her heart pounded so hard she thought it might leap out of her chest. She worried whether she could handle it as well as she’d imagined.
Marien clenched her lips tightly, trying not to let her trembling show.
“Inspector Maxim, good day.”
The uniformed officer guarding the front of the house greeted Maxim upon spotting him.
She slowly lifted her head and looked up at the house before her. It was a two-story brick home with a brown front door atop three stone steps—similar in appearance to Mrs. List’s boarding house.
Maxim strutted past it with an air of arrogance.
“Good work.”
Marien gave the officers a nod and stepped inside. The uniformed officers, initially puzzled, quickly realized who she was and whispered to each other, “So that’s the rumored female officer.”
“The one who threw herself at the jewel thief to catch him?”
“A female officer? The end times are truly upon us.”
