Her body kept sinking deeper, and fear trickled down her spine.

Marien tried to stay calm. She still retained enough reason to know that panicking now would only make things worse.

Slowly, she opened her eyes.

Everything around her was pitch black. It was so dark she couldn’t tell whether she was underwater or underground. She looked around, but saw nothing—only drifting debris floated past her vision.

She was suffocating and anxious. She couldn’t tell which way was up or down, nor which direction to swim toward.

Her cumbersome dress kept tangling around her ankles, making it impossible even to tread water. Meanwhile, her body sank ever deeper.

Her lungs slowly shrank, and her desperate thrashing was utterly meaningless.

Resignation finally clouded Marien’s eyes. With a despairing expression, she closed them.

At that very moment, a silence as cold and thick as the deep sea settled over the cliff above. Though it lasted only an instant, it felt like an eternity.

Christoph couldn’t comprehend what had just happened before his eyes.

He remembered his heart clenching at the sight of Marien teetering precariously on the cliff edge. He remembered his legs trembling.
