“Ugh.”

Her head felt like it was splitting open. Wondering why her headache was so severe, Marien suddenly sat upright.

“Huh!”

Startled, she jerked her upper body back. Liam, who had been untying the ropes around her wrists, raised an eyebrow and stepped back a pace.

For a fleeting moment, a bitter smile seemed to flicker across his lips—though it vanished so instantly she couldn’t be sure it had even been there.

“You seem to have come to your senses.”

Clank.

A metallic sound rang out. Marien’s gaze slowly drifted downward. Her ankles were now firmly locked in heavy shackles.

Rubbing her raw, reddened wrists, Marien wiped the corner of her mouth with the back of her hand. Her jaw ached stiffly from having a cloth stuffed in it for so long.

Even more unpleasant, however, was the persistent musty odor that refused to fade. Frowning faintly, she glared at the grimy cloth tossed carelessly onto the floor.

After letting out a short sigh, Marien turned her head back toward him.

“Who are those people, and why are they chasing us?”

“…”

Liam slowly stepped back, silently looking down at her. Even in this moment, his cerulean eyes remained resolute and unwavering. His gaze deepened, as if perplexed by her unbroken will.

“Why don’t you just kill me?”
