Liam stared at Marien with a glinting, amused smile. He subtly tugged at the corner of his lips.

“Just as I thought. Interesting.”

With those words, Liam immediately left the room.

Thud.

The door closed. Marien was left alone in the room. The sound of footsteps gradually faded away. In the distance, she heard a door open and close.

Only then did Marien finally relax the tension from her stiff shoulders. Her neck ached from the intense strain.

Her bound hands and feet began to tingle. Pain she hadn’t consciously registered suddenly flooded in all at once.

Yet instead of letting out a pained groan, Marien quietly closed her eyes.

“Christoph…”

His name slipped softly through her lips. She wasn’t hoping he’d come to rescue her. Even less did she wish for him to dramatically appear like some hero to save her.

She simply missed his stoic face terribly.

“He wouldn’t possibly think I ran away, would he? He’d be furious if he did.”

Her voice briefly carried a note of embarrassment. At the same time, she worried whether his feelings might have been hurt.

He was the kind of man who fretted as if the world had ended over even a sprained wrist—surely, right now, Christoph must be deeply concerned for her safety.

It was a strangely contradictory feeling. Though anyone could see she was the one in danger, she found herself worrying about someone else.
