In a moment of carelessness, his knee struck Marien squarely on the forehead. For an instant, stars exploded before her eyes. The unfamiliar physical pain left her dizzy and disoriented.

Just as Marien curled her body inward—

“……”

All expression vanished from Christoph’s face. No—it vanished only for a split second, instantly replaced by seething fury.

His eyes turned colder than ever, and the air around him sharpened like a razor’s edge. Anyone who drew near risked having their hand sliced off.

Without a word, he strode toward the man.

“Get out of my way, you bastard!”

The man violently jerked his leg again. Marien’s grip, barely clinging to his ankle, slipped off with a soft thud.

The man hastily turned to flee. At that moment—

“How dare you.”

Christoph swung his fist straight at him. With a solid thwack, the man’s jaw snapped sideways.

Bewildered, as if unable to comprehend what had just happened, the man’s eyes flew wide open. Staggering, he collapsed limply onto the ground.

Marien stared, momentarily forgetting her own pain, utterly stunned by this unfamiliar side of Christoph—a man who had lived his entire life as a noble gentleman and refined intellectual.

She had never seen him throw a punch before. And certainly not with such practiced ease.

“How dare you—do you even know who this woman is?”

Christoph ground out the words through clenched teeth, emphasizing each syllable with simmering rage. He took another step toward the man slumped on the ground.

Without the slightest hesitation, Christoph lashed out with his leg. There was no time to stop him. Crack. With a sickening sound, the man crumpled without even a cry.

Thud.

A velvet pouch tumbled from the man’s coat as he fell. From the loosely untied pouch, a single blue gemstone rolled out and came to rest at Christoph’s feet.

“……”

Marien blinked in confusion, while Jan gaped, alternating his stunned gaze between Christoph and the fallen man.

In the distance, the shrill whistles of officers echoed as they rushed toward them. Yet through it all, Christoph kept his deeply shadowed eyes fixed on Marien.

“Marien.”

Christoph called her name. His voice rasped as if he hadn’t spoken in years.

Only after Jan and the officers had taken the man away did Marien finally relax her shoulders and turn to look at him. She forced calm into her voice, pretending not to notice the turmoil in her heart.

“This isn’t a suitable place to talk. Shall we move somewhere else? There’s a park nearby.”

She returned the cane to the bewildered gentleman standing nearby, murmured, “Thank you,” and walked off first.

She heard quiet footsteps following behind her. Just from seeing his face, she realized her resolve was already crumbling, so she bit down hard on her lip.

Twilight began to settle. The park, now empty of children, held a stillness unlike the bustle of daytime. Marien found an unoccupied bench and sat down.

“Wait here a moment, Marien.”

Christoph, who had been silently watching her, suddenly turned and walked away. Marien watched his retreating back and genuinely considered running off right then and there.

But the thought scattered before it could fully form. He couldn’t possibly not know where her boarding house was—he’d come all this way, after all. And behind him stood Marquis Schneider.

What should I do…?

Marien looked up at the sky with a helpless expression. A silent sigh escaped through her teeth. Seeing Christoph again still made her heart race.

Suddenly, she remembered the very first moment she’d fallen for him—his elegance and grace, as if he belonged to a world entirely his own; his calm, confident presence, as though he owned the very ground beneath his feet.

All the rumors barely captured half his beauty.

Yet Marien knew that if she took his hand now, she’d only repeat the same mistake—hoping, then disappointed, and finally resigned.

She never wanted to go back to that. The despair she’d endured so far was already more than enough.

She squeezed her eyes shut to steady her wavering heart, then opened them again. Just as she gripped the hem of her dress tightly—

“Here.”

A dark shadow fell over her face. Marien slowly opened her eyes. In the center of her gradually clearing vision stood Christoph, holding out a handkerchief.

“Hold it to your forehead. It’s already starting to redden.”

Christoph frowned faintly. For a moment, it sounded as if a muttered curse—“Damn it”—had slipped through his teeth. Marien’s eyes widened, then softened into a faint smile.

That couldn’t be right.

Christoph was the grandson of Marquis Schneider. He’d received the finest education from birth and attended elite private schools reserved for the upper class.

His words and actions had always exuded refinement. At times, his demeanor was so elevated it felt intimidating. Marien had never once seen him utter a vulgar word.

So it was impossible for such coarse language to come from his lips. She must have misheard.

“Thank you.”

She took the handkerchief he offered. The moment the cool fabric touched her forehead, pain flared belatedly. Her entire brow throbbed. A short gasp escaped through her teeth.

“That bastard. I’ll kill him.”

“!”

Marien’s eyes flew wide open again. She hadn’t misheard after all. He sounded furious—or perhaps as if he himself were in pain.

Why?

Christoph was supremely rational and not the type to empathize with others’ suffering. He preferred offering solutions over sympathy.

The Christoph Marien knew would have advised her to press charges and even recommended a trusted lawyer. He was far too busy for trivial assault cases.

Yet here he stood, fists clenched, glaring at her forehead. His icy eyes strained to suppress a rising tide of fury.

Marien hid her flustered feelings beneath a calm expression. She heard him take a slow, deep breath.

A thin, brittle silence stretched between them—one that could shatter at any moment.

“……”

Suddenly, Christoph tightened his jaw. He’d had so much to say to Marien when they met—so many questions, perhaps even anger.

But none of it could find voice. Grinding his teeth, he finally managed to speak.

“Marien.”

A low, hoarse whisper slipped through his teeth—so quiet it would be missed unless one listened closely.

But Marien, whose nerves were already on edge, caught every word. The vibrating air rippled toward her like waves.

“……Yes.”

“Let’s go back. This escapade has gone on long enough.”

Escapade.

At that word, Marien quietly lifted the corners of her lips. Her faint, almost vanishing smile left Christoph looking bewildered.

This was the same man who never lost composure—no matter how decisive a witness appeared or how unexpected a twist arose. Yet now he stood speechless, staring blankly at her face.

“Marien.”

He called her name again, this time with clear anxiety, then rubbed his jaw with a dry hand. His voice came faster and more urgently than usual.

“It would be wise to return before rumors spread that you’ve disappeared. Unless you want to become prey for hyenas like them. No one knows you’re here yet—so let’s go back now. I’ll handle everything afterward.”

Marien gazed at him with deep cerulean eyes—as if holding the entire universe within them.

Silently.

For a very long time.

Christoph had always won silent standoffs. He was a man of immense patience, never once intimidated by the silence that surrounded him.

Yet now, unable to bear the lengthening quiet, he spoke again. His throat felt inexplicably dry. His stomach churned. A sense of foreboding trickled down his spine.

“I’m re-examining Veronica’s case.”

At those words, Marien’s eyes finally wavered. Christoph let out a breath of relief. Only then did he feel certain the person before him was truly Marien.

“Marien.”

He murmured her name once more, like a child who knew no other words.

Marien, who had remained silent until now, slowly moved her lips. His eyes never left her crimson mouth.

“I’m not going back, Christoph.”

“……”

If Marien had sobbed in despair, Christoph would have known exactly how to comfort her. If she’d raged furiously, he would have soothed her with practiced ease.

But Marien simply shook her head calmly—with a firmness that left no room for doubt.

In that instant, Christoph instinctively knew something was deeply, irrevocably wrong. His nape turned icy cold.

“I admit Veronica’s case was the catalyst. But I wouldn’t make such a monumental decision over just that one incident.”

As if to say, I’m not that impulsive a person, Marien looked up at him with steady eyes.

“……”

Christoph’s heart dropped like a stone. His face paled. It felt as if an icy hand had seized his throat. If it wasn’t about Veronica’s case, he had no idea what he was supposed to do.

The suffocating black helplessness that had weighed on him for days began creeping back up. Unconsciously, Christoph took a step forward—as if Marien might vanish if he didn’t.

“Christoph.”

This time, she called his name. But her voice held none of its usual warmth.

Damn it.

Christoph clenched his molars. Years of intense courtroom battles had honed his instinct—he could always sense the exact moment an opponent was about to deliver a decisive blow.

The atmosphere, taut as a violin string, and the subtle shift in air told him Marien was about to say something final.

He didn’t want to hear it. He couldn’t let her say it. He hurried to speak.

“Ma—”

But it was too late. Marien’s voice broke the silence first.

“From the very first moment I saw you, you were always my sun.”

Were.

The past tense scraped sharply against Christoph’s nerves. His usually confident eyes trembled violently.

“A brilliantly shining sun. And I was just one among countless stars orbiting you—small, insignificant, only able to sparkle by reflecting your light. So ordinary a star that no one, not even I myself, could understand why you proposed to me.”

“No, Marien, you’re not—”

Marien slowly raised her hand, as if to say her words weren’t finished yet. Christoph swallowed a quiet groan and fell silent.

“But that was fine. I was happy, Christoph. I believed the brighter you shone, the more I’d sparkle too. But then, at some point, I realized.”

“……”

“If the sun shines too brightly, the stars become invisible.”

“Marien.”

Marien slowly lifted her eyes to meet his and gently curved her lips. It was the same tender smile she’d always given him.

Yet for some reason, it felt distant—as if it didn’t belong to him. Or perhaps cold, like a frozen lake.

“So now, I want to try shining on my own. I want to become a star that can sparkle even without you. I’m tired of living a life where I recklessly hope, get disappointed, and fall into despair.”

Male lead is a clingy little husband

One-line summary: The male lead is initially an arrogant, noble, love-deprived brat, later a cute, clingy, scheming little jealous one.

Introduction:

One day, Lu Yuner’s soul transmigrates into a female-dominant world. She enters the Imperial Academy and takes up the position of a doctoral instructor, teaching classes and grading schoolwork.

One day, she encounters the young prince Su Qingwan secretly skipping class from the male academy.

As a result, Su Qingwan is punished.

From then on, Su Qingwan sees Lu Yuner as a “thorn in his side”.

But before long, this “thorn” becomes the person he cherishes most, and he goes to great lengths to win Lu Yuner’s affection.

Mini scene 1:

One day, the sun is high in the sky but Su Qingwan still hasn’t gotten up for class.

Servant Xiaoyuan: “Young prince, it’s time for class. You’ll be late otherwise.”

Su Qingwan says arrogantly: “I’m not going. I am the esteemed prince, my status is so noble, why should I suffer this hardship? Besides, isn’t learning all this just to please women? Hmph, they’re not worthy!”

Mini scene 2:

After Su Qingwan falls for someone, he completely changes. He no longer skips class and diligently learns how to be a good husband and father. But he discovers that Sister Yuner is always surrounded by admirers.

Drunk and overcome with jealousy one day, he clings to Lu Yuner, crying beautifully like a pear blossom in the rain.

Su Qingwan: “Qingwan likes Sister Yuner.”

Lu Yuner: “Young prince, you’re drunk.”

Su Qingwan: “Qingwan isn’t drunk. Qingwan likes Sister Yuner, likes you so much, likes you to bits…” Before he can finish, Lu Yuner’s eyes flash with emotion and she leans in closer.

[Reading Guide]

1. The female lead is gentle, gracious, humble and polite but not weak. The male lead is initially an arrogant, noble, love-deprived brat, later a cute, clingy, scheming little jealous one.

2. 1v1, a bit torturous in the beginning but definitely sweet later on.
