Maxim kicked the knife away with his foot and finally turned to look at Marien. She was still sitting on the floor, pale as a ghost.

“Are you all right?”

“…I-I think I’m okay.”

“You’re not.”

Maxim grimaced at her dazed, vacant expression and the return of her formal speech. Glaring fiercely, he kicked Kurt in the back.

“Yaaah!”

“Shut up! Where do you get off whining like that, whining! You’re dead now, you bastard. How dare you threaten an officer?”

Maxim raged as if he himself had been in danger. Marien stared at him blankly. When their eyes met, Maxim growled, “What? Why?”

“It’s nothing.”

Marien shook her head with a smile. Apparently, there was a place for Marien within his protective circle after all.

Perhaps the time they’d spent snapping at each other every time their eyes met hadn’t been entirely wasted.

Her wildly pounding heart gradually calmed. The trembling in her fingertips ceased. Marien brushed off her backside and stood up.

Her sleeve had torn straight down. Her white arm was exposed up to the elbow. As she looked at her clothes with an awkward expression, Marien’s face grew even more flustered.

“Huh?”

“You’re done for… What’s wrong? What happened?”
