Christoph stared at her blankly. Marien, raising her eyebrows slightly, began walking first at Jan’s urging voice: “Rookie! Hurry up!”

Christoph, watching her back, slowly took a step forward. Again, a madman’s chuckle seeped out uncontrollably. Embarrassed, he rubbed his lips.

“Rookie! You see, workplace life is…”

Christoph glared at Jan, who was delivering a lengthy lecture to Marien. Though irritated by his untimely interruption, he couldn’t bring himself to mind too much—he was in a rather good mood right now.

Besides, they still had plenty of time ahead of them.

“It really is serious. The heir of the Schneider family is a madman.”

A faintly amused murmur dropped at his feet. He quickened his pace and soon found himself walking side by side with Marien.

“So, in short, you’ve found absolutely nothing yet.”

At Nicholas’s cold remark, Marien cast her eyes down, crestfallen. To put it simply, that was indeed the case.

She added carefully but firmly, “However, there are several suspicious circumstances suggesting it wasn’t suicide. I believe we shouldn’t halt the investigation here, Inspector.”

“Hmm.”

Nicholas folded his arms and let out a low hum. Lost in thought, he furrowed his brow and looked at Marien.

“We must currently focus all our efforts on the murder case on Luitz Street. The victim was a well-known tavern owner in Blauberg, and various interests are tangled in his death. Two or three organizations had been locked in a turf war with him. We’ve been monitoring them for a long time, and now we stand at a crucial juncture—where we might dismantle them all at once. It’s a turning point for making Blauberg a safer city. Thus, we need every available officer.”

“But no matter how important the case may be, we can’t allow innocent victims to suffer because of it. I’ve always believed the fundamental principle of investigation is this: better to let ten thieves escape than to wrong a single innocent person.”

Marien’s voice was firmer than ever. She was recalling Veronica’s case—the unjustly rushed investigation tangled up in Crown Prince Leonhard’s disappearance.
