Marien stared at Liam with a bewildered look in her eyes. But Liam was just as clueless about the reason.

“The body arrived at the morgue exactly as it was found. There was no necklace. Could you perhaps have misseen it?”

“I didn’t missee it, Liam. I remember clearly.”

“Hmm.”

Liam’s gaze shifted back to the corpse. With his arms crossed, he continued in a casual tone.

“Perhaps it broke off while the officers were moving the body. That sort of thing happens occasionally. Officers aren’t always delicate, after all. However—”

Liam paused briefly there and fixed his eyes on Marien.

“Is that necklace important?”

“No.”

Marien quickly shook her head. Only then did an awkward smile appear on her lips, as if she felt apologetic for having brought up the necklace unnecessarily.

“I just suddenly remembered it. The design was rather unusual for a young lady. Oh! I was supposed to go to the Schulzes’ with Florian, but our conversation has gone on too long. Florian must be waiting.”

Feeling she’d stayed too long in the morgue, Marien hurriedly turned to leave, but suddenly let out a wry smile.

“I promised Johann Schulze I’d inform him of the autopsy results. No matter how many times I do it, meeting the victim’s family never gets easier. Well then, I’ll take my leave first, Liam.”

“Please tell them they may take the body. And I’d be glad if you let me know when we might share another meal, Marien. Ah, of course, excluding Mr. Christoph. It’s a secret that things were more enjoyable without Lord Schneider.”

At those words, Marien let out a light laugh. At that moment, Liam’s voice took on a distinctly serious tone.
