There was nothing else I could say besides that.

I looked at Shasha, projecting my younger sister onto her, and through Shasha, I was trying to relieve the guilt of failing to protect that sister.

How much time had passed like this? Ron and Ken returned. Saying they had escorted a criminal prisoner, they climbed into the carriage, and only then did it slowly begin to pick up speed.

Perhaps it was because Ron and Ken were there, or perhaps because I liked hearing Shasha’s sleeping breaths—I soon found myself dozing off as well.

And in that dream, I was forced to recall every memory I’d wanted to forget.

A terrible nightmare—the very nightmare that had haunted me my whole life, yet one I hadn’t experienced even once since becoming Isabella.

[Noah… Noah! Where are you?]

I was an orphan. And Noah was my only family. I was eight years old. My mother tightly bound one-year-old Noah to my small frame.

Even for a toddler, the child tied to my young body felt quite heavy—so heavy I nearly stumbled. But my mother didn’t care at all.

Instead, she opened a door somewhere.

An orphanage. At eight years old—the age when learning letters had just become exciting—I eagerly read every sign I saw. My mother never once praised me, but I didn’t mind; it still felt good.

But this time, it didn’t feel good at all. I knew all too well what kind of place bore the word “orphanage.”

She never said she’d come back for me. Never said she loved me or told me to wait. She simply ordered me inside, as if that place was where I truly belonged. There was no remorse, no sorrow.
