The duke said nothing. As if all his earlier bravado had vanished, he merely alternated his gaze between Tetel, who had already approached my side, and me.

“Yeah. Not just stop talking—please leave as well. I don’t like uninvited guests in my palace, specially granted to me by His Imperial Majesty the Emperor.”

“We’ll see how long you last.”

That was the end of it. Perhaps realizing further conversation wouldn’t benefit him, Evan turned and walked away.

“Ken, bring salt and sprinkle it generously over there.”

“Salt?”

“Yes. Something unholy entered my sacred palace and defiled it.”

“Oh, I understand.”

Ken dashed off without even understanding what he was doing. Only then did Tetel chuckle softly and bow his head.

“That felt incredibly satisfying!”

Tetel stretched his neck like a meerkat to check whether the duke had truly left, then pressed close to me.
