I was on my way from the kitchen to my quarters.

Originally, I had planned to go straight from the kitchen to his office, but for some reason, I felt like stopping by my room to wash my face.

Perhaps because of the heat, even a short time outside made my whole body sticky and my face dull in no time.

Upon reaching my quarters, I immediately went to the communal restroom, scrubbed my face thoroughly, and tidied my hair.

The brooch I’d bought from the frail old man for five copper coins on the day I went out to buy butter was completely hollow inside, allowing me to see my reflection in it.

Though it wasn’t large enough to show my whole face at once, I could at least roughly check my appearance.

I quickly opened the top drawer of the dresser beside my bed.

Inside lay the golden brooch, neatly placed. Even upon second glance, it looked utterly ordinary.

Although golden in color, it clearly wasn’t real gold—just painted—and completely empty inside.

Yet, strangely, the more I looked at this brooch, the more I liked it. I actually preferred that it was hollow.

‘Maybe I’ll buy a small accessory today at the festival to put inside it.’
