I Became the Regretful Male Lead's Sister (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 1
You shouldn’t meddle in other people’s affairs.
Especially if it’s a lovers’ quarrel.
It was a lesson I’d heard since my past life, so why didn’t I follow it?
Jaina stood at her wedding altar, lost in thought.
Why on earth am I standing here?
As if determined not to miss this moment, the officiating pope poured out words like a rapid-fire cannon.
“Now, we shall proceed with the oath’s kiss.”
At the pope’s words, Jaina stiffly turned to look at her partner’s face.
Unlike her nervous demeanor, the groom’s face seemed indifferent.
Jaina couldn’t help but feel unjustly wronged.
‘I’ll never meddle in other people’s business again!’
* * *
The novel *Proof of Misfortune* was a tear-jerking saga of the heroine Teresa Menisil’s unrequited love.
The male lead, Maximilian Winters, was endlessly kind and gentle to others, but not to his fiancée.
He was always cold and harsh, constantly pushing away Teresa, who craved his love.
Then one day, a scandal broke out between Maximilian and the imperial princess.
He was swayed by the princess Anais, whom the emperor cherished most, seeing in her something different from Teresa.
On top of that, the imperial family and the Winters family pressured Teresa to break off the engagement for their mutual benefit.
‘In the end, it all fell apart not long after.’
Broken in body and spirit, Teresa went into hiding with the help of the crown prince, who cared for her.
Of course, the male lead, belatedly realizing his love, came running to beg and plead, but Teresa, already on the brink of death, pushed him away.
‘All of that was because she didn’t want him to suffer after her death.’
Too kind for her own good, she died alone in sorrow.
Even in her final moments, she worried about Maximilian.
Hoping he wouldn’t be hurt and would find new love, her heartfelt wish left readers in tears.
‘How could you not love someone like that?’
Don’t we all think that when reading a story full of regret?
Anticipating how desperately the male lead will grovel, how much he’ll cling?
But to me, Maximilian didn’t meet that standard at all.
Yeah, so I left some harsh comments.
Maximilian, you * * jerk, just pair the heroine with someone else already.
Let them be happy together.
I’ll kill the male lead * * and go to hell.
Was it a bit much? I’ll admit it.
But that guy deserved to die screaming on the side of the road.
‘This is my chance.’
I clenched my fist and looked in the mirror.
In the mirror was a beautiful young woman, just reaching adulthood.
Her long platinum hair, so light it looked silver, shimmered in the sunlight.
Unlike Maximilian, her deep green eyes took after her mother.
An appearance so stunning it would make anyone turn back for a second look.
This was Jaina, the sister-in-law who tormented Teresa.
In the original story, Jaina was hated even more than the main villain, the princess, or Maximilian.
The epitome of the saying, “The sister-in-law who holds back is worse than the mother-in-law who strikes.”
That was me.
I had possessed Jaina, and it was before the original story began.
Maximilian hadn’t yet been swayed by the princess, and Teresa hadn’t been hurt yet.
‘The people of this family were all harsh to Teresa.’
Teresa and Maximilian’s engagement was made possible by the long-standing bond between their families.
But things changed when it was discovered that the mana stones from the Winters duchy could be processed for use like electricity.
Trending
Mana stones quickly permeated the lives of the empire’s citizens.
The duchy’s wealth grew at an astonishing rate, as did its influence across the empire.
The Winters family, once confined to the north, moved their power base to the capital.
‘And when the imperial family took an interest in the duchy’s mana stones, they wanted a political marriage.’
Even the Duke of Winters didn’t welcome this engagement.
It seemed he thought a lady from the Menisil family wasn’t enough for the now-powerful duchy’s matriarch.
With the head of the house feeling that way, the servants’ attitudes were no different.
They subtly tormented Teresa.
They tampered with her food and drink or made her wait in places unthinkable for a noble.
If it were anyone else, the engagement might have already ended. Teresa hid this thoroughly from the Menisil family. She wanted to maintain the engagement…
Of course, Maximilian didn’t care.
‘No more. Bully Teresa in front of me?’
I pulled the bell cord to summon a maid.
“Maria, when did you say Lady Menisil is arriving today?”
“She should be here soon, my lady. Will you be attending tea time today?”
“Yes. Make the preparations.”
In the original story, when Jaina attended tea time, the harassment toward Teresa intensified.
It was because the servants wanted to curry favor with Jaina by tormenting Teresa.
Jaina knew about this but didn’t care.
But things will be different from today. As long as I’m here, such things won’t happen in the duchy anymore.
* * *
I changed my clothes and entered the tea room.
“Jaina, come in.”
“Lady Jaina, welcome.”
Maximilian and Teresa were already in the tea room. I sat across from Teresa and observed them.
The male lead, Maximilian, was undeniably handsome.
Unlike me, with his pure silver hair, he had refined features.
And despite his delicate face, his body was perfectly sculpted, like a statue.
So that’s what they call a “bagel” look.
When Maximilian smiled sweetly at me, it felt like flowers were blooming around him.
‘Is that the kind of face that makes the heroine fall so hard?’
I clicked my tongue and turned my gaze.
There was Teresa, the heroine, unable to even look at her brother properly.
Blushing and fidgeting with her teacup, she looked unmistakably in love.
Seeing her like that made my blood boil.
I barely held back from shouting not to be fooled by his face.
“Jaina, is the tea not to your liking?”
Maximilian spoke to me as I hadn’t touched my teacup.
No, it’s you I don’t like.
Still sulking, I kept my eyes on Teresa.
She drank her tea with a perfectly calm expression. There’s no way they didn’t tamper with it.
How could she drink it so nonchalantly?
“I’d like to try what Teresa’s having.”
“M-Mine?”
Teresa flinched and pulled her teacup back at my deliberate words.
“Yes. Isn’t that Earl Grey from the Mago region? I heard it’s hard to get these days since it’s so trendy.”
It was a stretch, but it was true that it was trendy.
Not long after their engagement, Maximilian had personally brewed tea for Teresa.
The tea leaves used were from the Mago region.
It wasn’t a famous brand, but it became trendy after rumors spread that Maximilian had been buying it for years.

“Are you saying it’s a waste for my sister to drink your tea?”
When Teresa hesitated, Maximilian interjected.
That infuriating mouth of his. How does every word he says sound so smug?
Teresa’s hesitation had a reason.
The wicked maids had served her tea with salt instead of sugar!
They’d tormented her like this every time, but Teresa never missed a single meeting, driven by her determination to see this jerk of a male lead.
“We’ll bring a fresh one, my lady.”
Seizing the chance at my brother’s words, the maids approached to offer me new tea.
But that wouldn’t do. I needed to drink that one.
“No. I want that one.”
Ignoring the maids’ panicked expressions, I snatched the teacup.
And then…
“Ugh! What is this!”
“Good heavens! My lady, are you alright? Get water, quick!”
I spat out what I’d sipped. How could anyone drink this?
It was practically saltwater.
Could this be the cause of the incurable illness Teresa contracted in the original story?
Maximilian, trying a sip from the teapot, grimaced horribly as well.
“Who’s responsible for serving this!”
At Maximilian’s roar, the servants began to panic. None dared to step forward.
Their faces turned pale as they finally realized the gravity of their actions.
“Bring the one who prepared the tea. Now!”
At my shout, a terrified servant stumbled out of the tea room.
Soon after, the servant returned, dragging a half-dazed maid.
The pretty maid, slightly older than Teresa, fell flat before us.
“How dare you tarnish the honor of the Winters family.”
“Young master, it… it was a mistake. Please spare me just this once.”
I inwardly clicked my tongue at the trembling maid. Should I fire her as an example and move on?
Then, the head maid, Megan, stepped forward.
“Young duke, since this was a mistake by one of my subordinates, I’ll take punishment alongside her.”
A mistake? I know it was intentional.
I glared at her and said,
“Then you wouldn’t mind being expelled from the family in her place.”
Megan’s expression froze at my words. She probably didn’t expect me to go this far.
“Please show mercy, my lady. The head maid has served the family for over ten years.”
Now even the butler stepped in. Maximilian, seeming to want to let it slide, quietly held my hand.
But no way.
Since they made our heroine cry tears of blood, I’ll do the same to them.
“A mistake? All our teacups are fine, but only Teresa’s was like that? How do we know someone didn’t bribe you to drive a wedge between our family and the Menisils?”
“Jaina, that’s a bit of a leap…”
No, you be quiet.
“No, brother, this is about the honor of the Winters family. What house treats their betrothed like this and calls it a mistake?”
Mentioning the family’s honor shut up our great male lead.
Because it was true.
Teresa was too kind to make an issue of it, but if this went public, the duchy’s reputation would hit rock bottom.
“Lock up the head maid and the one who prepared the tea, and find out who’s behind this.”
At my brother’s command, everyone moved quickly. Our sweet Teresa was at a loss, feeling responsible for the situation.
“It’s all because of me…”
“Knowing that, ugh.”
I stomped hard on Maximilian’s foot. As the family’s representative, it was only right for him to apologize.

Catching the meaning in my glare, he quietly spoke.
“No need to feel guilty. Thanks to you, we’ve spared the family greater shame.”
Is that an apology?
I gritted my teeth and apologized to Teresa.
“We’re all sorry. We’ll thoroughly investigate and punish those responsible.”
At my apology, Teresa’s eyes widened.
Of course, she’d be shocked.
How harshly had Jaina treated her before?
I tightly held her hand and said,
“If anything difficult happens, please tell me.”
“Thank you, Jaina.”
Her tearful, touched expression was so beautiful.
“If anything like this happens again, speak up. Don’t just endure it foolishly.”
In this touching moment, our dear brother had to ruin it.
I really need to find a better man for Teresa than a jerk like Maximilian.

When male lead is the homewrecker
“I know she doesn’t love him.”
I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!

The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.
