Though it was a seldom-traveled forest path, the silence was eerie enough to send chills down one’s spine. After the coachman’s final warning to avoid it, his voice was heard no more.

“Please stay inside, both of you.”

Hilda, tossing aside the cloak draped over her shoulders, rose to her feet. Just then, the loud whinny of a horse reached our ears.

Horses rarely make such noises….

Seemingly sharing my thoughts, Hilda frowned and swiftly leapt out of the carriage. I quietly stood up and cautiously peeked my head through the open door.

“You mustn’t go out, Lady Rosebelia!”

“I’m not trying to leave—just to see what’s happening….”

What on earth is that?

It wasn’t loose gravel that had stopped our carriage. An old, rickety carriage blocked our path ahead. Though resembling a cart crudely assembled from wooden planks, its form was unmistakably that of a carriage.

“This carriage comes from the Imperial Palace. Step aside.”

“No.”

The coachman driving the old carriage grinned crookedly. As if his words were a signal, men poured out of the carriage in a rush.

There were easily over ten of them, all dressed in attire utterly unsuited for the season. Not only were they wearing sleeveless tops in late autumn, but their garments lacked even the simplest buttons.

Judging by their sun-darkened skin, were they foreigners from the south?

“What do you want? If it’s money or jewels you’re after…”
