A heavy silence settled into the office. Even the servant who had been pacing the hallway seemed to have left his post—since a while ago, I’d been hearing phantom voices. Ian ignored the chuckling voice and lowered his gaze back to the documents.

‘I heard you didn’t go to the knights’ order today….’

Just then, someone’s inner thoughts reached his ears. Recognizing the voice’s owner instantly, Ian quickly rose to his feet.

“Your Majesty.”

The one who strode into the suddenly opened office was Calisto.

“So Nathan must be away from his post.”

“What brings you here at this hour?”

Calisto usually visited Ian in the late afternoon or evening. Seeming slightly uneasy under the bright sunlight flooding Ian’s office, Calisto glanced around before answering.

“Isn’t it about time we stopped worrying about appearances?”

“Sir?”

Calisto chuckled softly and stepped closer to Ian. His eyes, fixed on Ian, grew momentarily wistful.

“I held back from visiting you often because I feared the Empress would keep you under watch. I’d planned to grant you a suitable title after your birthday and send you away from the palace safely….”

“Ian, I wanted you to leave this place and live freely. Truthfully, that was the life Violet and I once dreamed of as well. Violet hoped you wouldn’t end up on the throne like me, but it seems we never truly had a choice.”

A hot breath escaped through Ian’s clenched teeth as he stared at Calisto’s regretful face. He barely suppressed the surge of anger rising within him, biting down hard on his own lips.
