The somewhat low voice came from the center of the bedroom, where the sofa was placed. I quickly pulled down the blanket and sat up abruptly.

I knew it was him just by the sound of his voice, yet I looked him over again as if to confirm his face.

Though the room was slightly dim, I could clearly tell it was Ian sitting on the sofa. It wasn’t an illusion.

“Ian, when did you get here? You should’ve woken me if you came.”

“I arrived at the mansion about an hour ago. Melissa was debating whether to wake you since you hadn’t eaten dinner, so I came up myself.”

Now that he mentioned it, I noticed a tray sitting on the table in front of the sofa. He must have brought food up and waited without waking me as I slept.

“I see.”

He slowly rose to his feet, lit the candlestick, and approached me. My heart pounded in rhythm with his footsteps echoing against the floor.

“What did you mean by what you said just now?”

“What did I say?”

“You said….”

Flickering candlelight softly fell over Ian’s hesitant face. Somehow, his gaze, fixed on me, visibly wavered at the edges.

“I had a strange dream. I don’t remember it clearly, but in it, I died and then came back to life. I guess I was muttering nonsense in my sleep….”

“So that’s why you said that?”

His voice trembled slightly as he asked. Recalling my words seemed so painful that his brow had already furrowed tightly.
