I slowly opened my eyes, which had been closed. Turning my head, I gazed out the small window at the scenery outside, and my vision filled with the sight of white powder fluttering in every direction.

“It’s snow.”

Could this be the first snowfall of the year?

I stared blankly at the falling snow for a moment. Judging by how the flakes were growing steadily larger, it probably wouldn’t stop until afternoon—and if so, it would surely pile up quite a bit.

After a winter like this, with snow continuing to fall, the year would turn, time would pass further, and before long, warmth would return. Then, just as it did every year, the mountain gate would bloom brilliantly with all manner of plum blossoms.

Buds formed before the snow had fully melted; once warmth came and the snow melted away, they bloomed; when summer arrived, fruit would set; and then, as leaves inevitably fell—that natural progression governed the transformation and advancement of all things in the universe and the world.

“Unless one, like me, involuntarily moves backward, this is simply the natural trajectory of life. A cycle repeated yearly, so long as the tree itself doesn’t die….”

Just as I absentmindedly reached that thought—

I felt a flash of light briefly streak through my mind.

“The cycle of life.”

And everything derived from that cycle….

I slowly adjusted my posture and closed my eyes once more, so my vision wouldn’t interfere with the thoughts unfolding within.

It’s not only the plum tree that repeats its cycle periodically. Perhaps all living beings do. Perhaps even the world itself does.

I’m not sure whether this place follows Earth’s physical laws exactly, but given that day turns to night and seasons change, this planet must rotate on its axis and revolve around the sun.

Thus, unless the sun vanishes or Earth ceases to exist, this cycle will surely continue.
