I Became a Supporting Character in a Martial Arts Novel (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 1
The fiercely burning flames devoured the estate’s main hall without the slightest hesitation.
Though perhaps not the dominant power of the region, the Baek Clan’s estate was sizable, boasting its own traditions. Perhaps because there was so much to burn, the flames showed no sign of dying down anytime soon.
Strangely, however, not a single scream could be heard. Everyone inside the estate was already dead.
The villagers near the estate, seemingly unwilling to get entangled in such inexplicable violence, stayed indoors—no one dared step outside. Thus, under the eerie and uneasy silence of midnight, the Baek Clan met its annihilation.
…leaving behind only a single survivor.
[This is the timeline separator]At the edge of the forest just outside the village.
Huddled behind thick shrubs sat Baek Yeoheun, a girl barely ten years old, who suddenly wondered how long it had been since the screams had stopped.
‘An hour? Maybe half a shichen?’
Her sense of time had grown hazy, making it impossible to judge precisely how much time had passed. One thing, however, was certain—she was cold.
Though it was spring, the midnight air remained chilly. She hadn’t noticed while fleeing in panic, but after staying motionless and hidden for so long, the cold now felt overwhelming.
Her body trembled uncontrollably from tension, fear, and the biting chill. Yeoheun curled her icy fingers into fists and lowered her head.
‘They must have already realized I escaped. Are they looking for me?’
And if they find me… will I be killed too?
With that unspoken question—directed at no one in particular—her tears fell onto the cold earth.
“Why…?”
Her life had always been lonely. None of her family had ever shown her genuine affection.
Yet, for all its loneliness, that burning estate had been the place where she was born and raised. It was a place of pain, yes, but also one that had shielded her from the outside world. She had lived there for over ten years.
Now, however, it had been erased from the world.
Whether or not they had been close, her blood relatives—and all the estate’s servants—were surely dead.
Thus, in Yeoheun’s narrow world, there was no one left to turn to for help.
‘I’m scared.’
Afraid her sobs might give away her location, Yeoheun clenched her teeth. Yet, deep inside, a quiet whisper suggested it might be easier to be found and killed.
Yeoheun didn’t even know why her family had been exterminated.
To a child who understood nothing, this sudden tragedy felt no different from a natural disaster.
‘What do I do now? How can I…?’
At that very moment—
Yeoheun abruptly sensed an unknown presence rapidly approaching from beyond the shrubs. It moved without any attempt to conceal itself.
Frozen in fear, she held her breath—then the figure revealed itself.
“…Ah.”
The ones who had set the estate ablaze and slaughtered its people all wore black clothes and veiled their faces with black cloth.
But the person now before her was the exact opposite.
White clothing.
His face was clearly visible.
Most notably, his hair was secured by what looked like a Daoist crown.
That was all she could discern—but in her current situation, with nothing left to lose, hiding would solve nothing. Perhaps it was worth taking a desperate gamble.
The child rose unsteadily on trembling legs.
And then….
[This is the timeline separator]“…Huh.”
I jolted awake.
Without time to assess my surroundings, I shot upright—only to sway sideways instantly from a wave of dizziness.
“No, ah.”
I lay back down and took several slow, deep breaths until the vertigo subsided. Thankfully, the dizziness soon faded, and my sleepiness gradually lifted as well.
As soon as I felt slightly better, questions immediately filled my mind.
‘What…?’
Blinking in confusion, I watched my vision slowly sharpen and the room around me become clearer.
It was an unfamiliar room.
‘I feel like I was watching something burn from afar.’
…Was it a dream?
Trending
Ah, it must have been a dream.
Realizing this brought a small measure of relief. Though I couldn’t explain why, the dream had left me feeling utterly hopeless. Even now, my hands still trembled slightly. I clenched them tightly to suppress the shaking.
Since I couldn’t recall many details, it was probably just a meaningless nightmare—the kind where all sorts of buried, unpleasant memories swirl together in the subconscious.
More importantly, though, was figuring out where I was.
I carefully retraced my last real memory—the one before this nightmare.
‘Right… I’m pretty sure I got hit by a truck.’
Unlike the dream, this memory was crystal clear.
I’d been on my way home after finishing a part-time shift. Crossing an empty crosswalk, I saw a truck speeding toward me, ignoring traffic signals. My body froze in shock.
I remembered the impact, flying through the air, then landing on the ground and staring up at the sky.
‘How am I not dead?’
Given the circumstances, this place must logically be a hospital.
‘…But.’
I turned my eyes to examine the room. Paper-covered white walls, wooden-framed windows with rice paper panes, a small side table, and a drawer cabinet came into view.
Though tidy and decent overall, nothing about it resembled a modern medical facility. There was no antiseptic smell in the air either.
‘What kind of place is this?’
As I tried to sit up again in confusion, I froze.
Earlier, startled by the nightmare and still disoriented, I hadn’t noticed it before…
But for some reason, my body moved perfectly fine.
That was impossible. I’d been struck by a massive truck, and I distinctly remembered hearing bones break when I hit the ground. Yet, as I looked down at myself in bewilderment, I realized something strange.
‘…I’m smaller.’
My body was small.
“Huh?”
The hands I stared at in disbelief belonged to a child of about ten years old. The hands I remembered were at least a finger and a half longer—but no matter how hard I rubbed my eyes, what I saw didn’t change.
“No, what is this…?”
Modern medicine couldn’t possibly have advanced this far, could it? Still staring dumbfounded at my hands, I was interrupted by a sound.
Creak.
The closed door swung open abruptly without warning. Frozen in place, I managed only to turn my head toward the entrance. A tall man in black strode confidently into the room.
“You’re awake.”
He looked East Asian, but the language he spoke was unfamiliar—his pronunciation sounded strange. Yet somehow, I understood his words perfectly.
Only then did I realize that even my own muttering just moments ago hadn’t been in Korean.
“Uh…”
Before I could hide my bewilderment, the man in black approached and sat down on the chair beside my bed.
Despite his imposing size, his footsteps made no sound, and even the simple act of sitting down was executed with flawless precision.
Up close, he appeared to be a stern, handsome man in his mid-thirties, exuding quiet authority.
His long hair was tied into a single braid, and his black attire resembled the martial robes found only in wuxia novels—though upon closer inspection, delicate red flowers were embroidered along the collar.
Our eyes met briefly after my quick observation. Too nervous to look away, I stayed silent—and strangely, so did he.
He seemed unsure of what to say.
After a moment of silence, he hesitantly spoke first.
“Are you alright?”
I had no idea what exactly he was asking about.
But if I had to answer honestly, nothing about this situation was “alright.”
I’d been hit by a car, woken up in a strange place that wasn’t a hospital, discovered my body wasn’t the one I remembered, and now a complete stranger had barged in and asked, out of nowhere, if I was “alright.”
Moreover, the language being spoken throughout all this was completely foreign—yet I understood it effortlessly and had even used it unconsciously myself.
‘…Isn’t this called “transmigration”?’
The thought suddenly popped into my head.
Now that I thought about it, I’d encountered this kind of story many times in various forms. It was a common trope.
‘Transmigration.’
If I abandoned all sense of realism, the term sounded plausible enough. But come on—such things only happened in fiction. There was no way this could be real.
‘But… is this actually reality?’
My thoughts were starting to feel sluggish. Maybe this was all just another dream?

‘I don’t know.’
So, resigning myself to fate, I simply opened my mouth.
“Um.”
“Speak.”
“Excuse me… who are you?”
The already awkward atmosphere in the room instantly turned icy.
I immediately regretted my words.
[This is the timeline separator]The man in black, after telling me briefly to wait, hurried out of the room and returned shortly with another person.
This newcomer wore white robes overlaid with a wide-sleeved sky-blue changpao. He appeared a few years older than the man in black.
“Here, let me see your hand.”
The man in white casually took the chair beside the bed and abruptly held out his hand.
Without thinking, I obeyed his instruction—then froze, realizing I’d acted without any caution. But it was too late; he already had my arm.
He held my wrist as if checking my pulse, his expression serious as he looked down. Helpless, I let my arm stay in his grasp and absentmindedly watched his sleeve brush over my palm and fall downward.
Upon closer inspection, I noticed the same red flowers embroidered on his sleeves—the same ones I’d seen on the black-clad man’s collar.
‘…Why so many flowers?’
Neither of them seemed like the type to wear floral patterns…

When male lead is the homewrecker
“I know she doesn’t love him.”
I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!

The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.
Here’s the story synopsis:

Or was I wrong?
Either he is also a transmigrator or she truly misunderstood his character as protagonist. As readers we sometimes tend to look at characters on the surface level. Especially if the author doesn’t want us to look beyond or is unable to create enough depth for them to go beyond
