Is he really the protagonist of the original work?
At first glance, he seemed like the protagonist, but the more I knew, the less he seemed to have the typical personality given to an average protagonist.

‘The original protagonist was quite nice and sociable, wasn’t he?’

Was he not?

Come to think of it, I only read the beginning, so I might only remember the outwardly described personality.

I entered into Wolyeong and Cheongmaegwan. The one who usually guards the mountain base and resides in Cheongmaegwan greeted us in a relaxed manner.

“Both of you, welcome.”

Although he is my disciple, due to the allocation, he is my first disciple. His name was Nam Gyeongwoon.

“Ha Hyun, your master is my senior disciple, so you can call me junior master. And Wolyeong, you can now call him master.”

Junior Master, huh?

After the introduction, he didn’t add any serious words or advice.

He simply told us to rest for today as we’d have to get up early and work hard tomorrow. He led us each to our rooms, so we spent the day moderately.

The next day at dawn.

I’d usually start the day around this time, so I had no problem getting up, washing briefly, getting dressed, and stepping outside of Cheongmaegwan.

In the cold air of winter dawn, I was lightly moving to warm up when Junior Master, whom I’d met yesterday, came outside holding various items.

“Up already?”

“Yes. Good morning, Junior Master.”

I bowed my head in greeting and added,

“Actually, I usually wake up at this time.”

“Is that so?”

He smiled broadly and casually said,

“Actually, if you can’t wake up on time, you’re disqualified. I didn’t think you would fail, being the disciple of Senior Yuwoon.”

Uh-oh.

‘…He’s awake, isn’t he?’

For a moment, I hardened my expression.

Junior Master chuckled softly at my expression.

“If it comes to it, you can wake him up. But don’t worry. When I checked earlier, Wolyeong also seemed to be awake. He’s probably preparing. Are you going together from the start?”

“Ah…”

I unwittingly let out a sigh of relief.

After all, it’s unlikely to be disqualified for not waking up here. Such a trivial and hollow crisis wouldn’t suit Wolyeong.

“Yes, because when we arrive at the mountain gate, he will ultimately become my disciple.”

“Hmm. Indeed. I heard the story of how you ended up taking this test. Your decision is very dignified.”
He answered in a gentle tone. I had thought the same thing yesterday, but the monk before me had a consistently relaxed and warm demeanor, making it quite comfortable to converse with him. I greeted him with a faint smile.

“Thank you.”

Nodding his head, he then seemed to take a moment to quietly observe me before speaking again.

“Do you remember? The first time you came to the volcano, besides Yuwoon, I was the one who saw you first.”

I was taken aback by the unexpected statement and widened my eyes. He continued in a soft voice.

“Actually, it’s not surprising. This temple is located beneath Yeonhwabong, you were unconscious, and Yuwoon had to carry you up to the mountain gate. I was concerned because you looked so weak at the time, but seeing you healthy now, a year later, feels refreshing.”

If it was a year ago, it was probably not me, but the original ‘Ha Hyun.’

‘…But I guess I’m the same person to the monk.’

I felt a bit odd, but I simply listened to him in silence. I felt certain that he was sincere.

“Moreover, I’ve heard a few times that your five elements are outstanding. It looks to be true. This test probably won’t be too hard for you. You should be able to do it. Hmm… yes. It seems you’ve already accepted Wolyeong as your priest in your heart, so just endure it for one more day.”

“Yes. Thank you, Monk.”

My voice came out a bit subdued. The monk seemed to hesitate for a moment, then slowly reached out and lightly patted my shoulder.

He then handed me the items he had prepared.

“This is a canteen of water and some dry rations. Take care of them.”

“Yes.”

Around that time, Wolyeong emerged from within the temple.

Monk handed Wolyeong the canteen and dry rations as well. While he briefly reiterated a few simple guidelines and conditions for passing the test, I took a few steps back and waited.

I was confident enough to pass the test as the High Priest had assured, and even if I failed due to some unfortunate accident, the guidance I had already received wouldn’t be taken back.

So, while the monk had acted as a monk towards me, he used a slightly stricter tone with Wolyeong.

“Then endure it.”

Once the explanation of all the guidelines and conditions was over, the monk concluded. I turned to look at him, brought my hands together, and bowed lightly.

That was the end of the agenda at Cheongmaegwan.
He walked out of the main gate of the temple and headed for the mountain trail, finding himself oddly conflicted. Not necessarily upset, but certainly feeling strange. As he moved forward absentmindedly, Wolyeong, who was half a step behind, suddenly spoke.

“…Seal.”

“Yes.”

He turned to look at him. A face displaying slight confusion appeared.

“You seemed to be waiting for me earlier… Will you go with me?”

What is this?

‘Why is he saying such odd things?’

We came down together, so of course we should go up together. Should I abandon him and go ahead?

‘Convenient, I suppose.’

Ah, no. I couldn’t actually do that, in good conscience.

Scolding him for what he saw me as wasn’t really an option; we weren’t that close. So, he sighed inwardly.

‘Well, he might not know what’s going on.’

How would Wolyeong know about my resolution to become a decent adult, while treating well the character presumed to be the reserve priest and the protagonist of the original work, without asking for their permission?

Considering he asked such a question, it seemed he had a tendency to not easily accept simple kindness. So, he gave a casual answer.

“It would be boring to go alone.”

Perhaps it was an unexpected response; Wolyeong blinked a few times. He just smiled and turned his head away.

Male lead is a Love-Obsessed Merman

When he discovers she has gone, he risks everything to pursue her on land, enduring agonizing pain to transform his tail into human legs…

One-line summary: Male lead chases female lead. The male lead’s love is a bit sick, an invincible love brain.

Synopsis

During a voyage at sea, Jiang Yang accidentally captures a merman.

Servant: I heard that mermen are fierce and brutal.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman obediently rubbing her palm like a puppy: “You call this fierce and brutal?”

Servant: I heard that mermen have no human nature.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman with wet puppy eyes, obsessively calling her ‘A Yang’ like a childish infant: “You call this having no human nature?”

With great difficulty, she releases the merman back into the sea and returns to shore.

Who would have thought that in less than half a month, the merman, who should have been freely wandering in the South China Sea, would shed his scales, endure the pain of losing his tail, transform into human legs, and come ashore to find her?

He kneels at her feet, rubbing her palm, with merman tears rolling down: “A Yang, don’t abandon me.”
