The conference room, convened for the Personnel Committee meeting regarding Kyo Hwan’s sick leave due to his comatose condition, was thick with tension like an impending storm.

“Right now, Noel stands on the verge of its 50th anniversary and is preparing for its second great leap forward. Under these circumstances, we cannot afford to leave the position of Corporate Division Head vacant when there’s no way of knowing when he might recover. According to company regulations, if an employee suffers from a serious illness that prevents them from performing their duties normally, a vote must be held to appoint a replacement. This rule applies even to representatives—no exceptions. I urge you all to make a wise and prompt decision for the sake of swiftly resolving this leadership gap and restoring normal operations.”

Jae Ik finished his opening remarks and stepped down from the podium, only to freeze at the sharp knock echoing from outside the door.

Through the door opened by Team Leader Nam, Seung Yul entered alongside Lady Min Ja Hyun and bowed deeply toward the seated executives and staff.

“Hello. My name is Choi Seung Yul. I came here in person because I thought you’d all be concerned about my dad’s health after hearing he collapsed at work. After all, I was the first one to find him when he went down.”

Dressed neatly in a suit and standing with dignified composure, he evoked memories of a young Kyo Hwan from 28 years ago—who had visited the company right after attending his father’s and grandfather’s funerals.

“Lady Min, you must be terribly busy tending to the patient—what brings you here? And why bring such a young grandson along?”

Of course, Jae Ik wasn’t really asking out of ignorance—it was more like a scornful jab: *Do you really think dragging a child along will make us pity you enough to spare your husband?*

Mindful of the firm’s public image, Jae Ik couldn’t turn them away rudely, so he greeted Ja Hyun with a stiff, perfunctory bow as she entered with Seung Yul.

“You know there’s an important meeting happening—since Director Kang Jae Ik didn’t invite me, I had no choice but to come myself.”

Seeing Ja Hyun desperately trying to preserve her dignity despite everything, Jae Ik found her almost endearing in her stubbornness.

“You’re busy caring for a critical patient day and night—how can you just leave them alone at the hospital?”

Jae Ik met Ja Hyun’s eyes and, as if suddenly remembering, nodded.

“Oh, right—I’d nearly forgotten. You mentioned there’s a private tutor staying with him, didn’t you? Funny how you claimed back then, when breaking off the engagement, that you two were nothing more than strangers. According to his attending physician, even if he wakes up, he’ll likely suffer lasting effects from brain damage and won’t be able to lead a normal life. The company deeply regrets the potential loss of such a capable talent.”
