“The defendant Kang Jae Ik first met Hwang Tae Sung 28 years ago, when he was a prosecutor at the Central District Prosecutors’ Office and Hwang Tae Sung was the accused.”

Prosecutor Lee Sung Min, dressed in his robe, was presenting the indictment against Jae Ik, who had been charged with instigation of murder, acceptance of bribes, retaliatory threats, abuse of authority, brokerage of bribes, coercion, destruction of evidence, perjury, fraud, speculation, tax evasion, embezzlement, and other violations under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.

When the two-faced nature of this man—who had been a strong presidential candidate for the ruling party—was exposed, the media and his political rivals in the opposition party rushed to dig up Jae Ik’s crimes.

Kang Jae Ik, who had pinned all the charges on the deceased Hwang Tae Sung and claimed innocence, initially hired twelve defense attorneys, but when they all resigned under the weight of public criticism, he ended up having to defend himself alone from the defendant’s seat.

Hwang Tae Sung illegally fled to the Philippines to escape the tightening net of investigation, but soon squandered the money Jae Ik had given him on gambling and repeatedly asked for more.
