“Water? I’ll have a glass of champagne and some water, please.”

Hughgray raised and lowered one eyebrow slightly, as if surprised by Chloe’s drink choice, and placed the order with the staff.

“We carry three types of champagne at our establishment. Which variety would you…?”

Why on earth did they stock three types of champagne? Chloe was regretting her choice of restaurant even more now. The staff member was clearly experienced—a woman who fluently recited the names and characteristics of all three champagnes while keeping her gaze fixed not on the menu, but on Hughgray’s face.

“Dobigny.”

Hughgray replied curtly.

“Actually, our house specialty to pair with champagne is a pre-meal canapé: biscuits topped with cream cheese and sturgeon caviar…”

Chloe was certain her expression must have cracked by now. When would this woman finally stop talking?

“Bring that as well.”

Thankfully, Hughgray cut off the staff member’s lengthy explanation and placed the order.

“Yes, then for dessert, we have…”

“That’s enough. We’re done ordering.”

Hughgray finally stopped her.

“Yes, sir. I’ll prepare everything and bring it right away.”

Unfazed by the shift in Hughgray’s tone, the staff member smiled brightly, stared at his face for about two more seconds, then reluctantly walked briskly away, still clutching the menu.
