She had acted as if she liked men, but now that he’d actually said that, she was utterly bewildered.

Hadn’t he been the one who kept doubting her?

“No, I can’t say for sure about that. Even close friends don’t necessarily share everything.”

Aside from essential lies, telling the truth as much as possible minimized errors in deception. Chloe tried her best to stick strictly to the truth, except for one single, fatal falsehood.

“If you’re close enough to even take care of your mother in her stead, you two must be very close. Why didn’t you just tell me?”

The Duke’s words were hard to understand.

Was he really asking her to confess that she was fond of men, or that she liked him? Even if it were true, why on earth would she tell something like that to a friend?

“I’ll have breakfast on the balcony. Tell someone to prepare it there. I’ll have lunch at the Gazebo in the garden, so have them set it up accordingly.”

The Duke, who had left Chloe utterly flustered, suddenly gave instructions about meal locations.

“Yes, understood.”

Normally, breakfast was in his room, and lunch and dinner in the dining room—but ever since he’d started asking Chloe to serve him meals, he’d been eating outdoors instead. Judging by his insistence on eating on the balcony and in the garden again today, he must want her to serve him.

By the time she finally left the Duke’s room, any gratitude she’d felt toward him had vanished without a trace.
