He wasn’t entirely incapable of understanding his race’s anguish and hesitation regarding the possibility of war, and to some extent, he could even anticipate it.

After all, even Hughgray himself found this absurd situation utterly ridiculous. Because the lion cub had gone mad, he’d been forced to make impossible decisions despite knowing full well how nonsensical the circumstances were.

Yet, even so, the fact that his race refused to obey the Alpha’s orders meant they no longer regarded him as their Alpha.

“They’re condemning her, saying Miss Chloe is an unprepared mate. Though she’s supposedly a tiger shifter, news has spread that she was utterly helpless against the assassin squad’s attack, casting doubt not only on her shifter abilities but even on whether she can bear an Alpha.”

Hughgray glared at Joyce. Though he knew Joyce was merely fulfilling his duty by reporting the outcome of the wolf shifters’ assembly, it was hard to suppress his anger.

“If Chloe isn’t there, I’ll die. So is my race truly longing for the Alpha’s death? Do they desire a replacement Alpha?”

“That didn’t seem to be the case. Your Grace has always been stronger than any previous Alpha…”

“It’s contradictory. They reject my mate yet still acknowledge me as Alpha. I cannot accept their inconsistency. Go tell them this: rejecting my mate is the same as rejecting me. And if they refuse to change their stance, inform them I’ll act not as an Alpha, but merely as an ordinary wolf shifter.”

A somber expression rose on Joyce’s face.

“Tell them that if they won’t come to rescue my mate, I’ll rescue her alone. Tell them the peace pact among shifters and even my position as Alpha mean nothing to me anymore—and bring back their answer. Also convey that I’m giving them one final chance.”

“Yes.”

As Joyce left the outer palace with a darker expression than ever before, Hughgray returned to Chloe, now scrutinizing potential attack and escape routes within the imperial palace more closely than he ever had.

Just as Leina Tilbeth had predicted, Hughgray had chosen Chloe over his race. It was only natural—he’d chosen Chloe over his race even back when he’d believed Chloe was male. Even before he’d understood it was imprinting, he’d already made his choice.
