“Hey. Ines.”

The constant sound of water had quieted, as if she’d submerged herself in it.

“Hmm?”

“I think I might be a little happy.”

Anyone who heard her would call her mad. Charlotte had lost her child to her husband’s violence. Moreover, she’d been stripped of her noble status and forced to serve as a maid for five years for nearly killing him. Yet Ines understood her words.

“It’s exciting to think I can become anything from now on. After all, there’s no husband here to beat me. And I love wandering around like this—it’s so joyful to see something new all the time.”

Charlotte emerged from the water, apparently finished washing. Under the faint moonlight, only the barest silhouette was visible, which reassured Ines—it was barely distinguishable as a person unless looked at closely.

“I’ll sit on that rock over there. Go ahead and wash. The water’s really cool.”

Ines left Charlotte behind, crossed the shallow stream, and went deeper into a more secluded spot. The lantern’s light faded, plunging her briefly into darkness, but she soon adjusted to the moonlight.

She could see the moon’s reflection shimmering and gathering on the clear, flowing water.

As she went further in, one side was indeed quite deep, just as she’d expected. Curling up and crouching down, she submerged herself completely, even her hair.

Gurgle… In that vacuum-like silence, no surrounding sounds reached her ears. Feeling detached from the world, Ines sensed peace.

At that very moment, Charlotte found herself standing face to face with someone unexpected.

“My lord?”

He approached so confidently, holding a bright lantern, that she recognized him from afar. Even alone, Carson stood out unmistakably among any crowd due to his imposing presence.
