“I think I kept that promise very well.”

At the childlike words seeking praise, Carson gave a faint smile.

“Don’t you think so?”

“I do.”

“A promise is something both sides have to keep, right?”

“Of course.”

Ines took the hand of the man holding her head. She waited briefly until he met her gaze.

“Has everything been… alright with you, my lord?”

‘Have you heard words that hurt your heart or caused you pain? Have you faced moments where you had to bear difficult decisions alone?’

With all the questions she wanted to ask held in her eyes, Ines asked plainly. He looked at her for a moment before smiling as usual.

“Yes, nothing’s wrong.”

Carson didn’t open his mouth further. Ines couldn’t muster the courage to cross the line he had drawn.

Like someone ready to reject any words of comfort, Carson looked as strong as ever. If that’s what made him comfortable, she thought, then she should let it be.

But a part of her heart grew heavy. And suddenly, she recalled something he had said.

She now understood a little why Carson had looked so pained when he said that.
