How to Turn a Kind Savior into an Emperor (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 41
Because it was a closed trial, the area around the presiding judge was quiet.
The courtroom itself was no different. Ines took a seat as far in the corner as possible, accompanied only by a single guard.
In the front row sat Count Graeham’s wife, his son, and his red-haired daughter. Just in case, she scanned the surroundings, but Joseph was nowhere to be seen.
Soon, Count Graeham, pale-faced, stood at the defendant’s stand—an unimaginable sight compared to the man who had once glared defiantly at Carson with venomous eyes.
Moments later, his wife’s sobbing filled the entire courtroom.
The first person to take the witness stand was, naturally, Rena Marierre. She was already wearing prisoner’s garb, suggesting she had been sentenced and was serving time even before Count Graeham’s verdict.
Even if she had only acted under orders, she couldn’t possibly escape all punishment. Yet, her prisoner’s uniform wasn’t from Romfield.
Since the murder had failed and she had confessed outright and now stood as a witness, her sentence was likely greatly reduced. And above all, Jason was still alive, wasn’t he?
Surely, Carson would have ensured the boy’s safety at the very least.
As if to prove this, Rena testified boldly about Count Graeham’s deeds.
Looking at Rena—clear-eyed and speaking with precision—Ines felt certain that she would never lose her mind again.
More witnesses followed in abundance. The man who had hidden Rena’s child testified, as did the one who had drugged Rena before she was given the task. Others also appeared one after another, claiming they had received orders from Graeham to kill Viscount Swenden.
Thus, the trial ended astonishingly quickly.
At the judge’s declaration confirming Graeham’s death by hanging, Countess Graeham finally fainted.
“Your Majesty, the Empress! Let me see Her Imperial Majesty!”
