Ines was out in the garden reading the scriptures.

It was still hot at midday, but cool breezes blew in the mornings and evenings. Thanks to the large awning they had set up, she could stay outside even during the day, but Ines especially liked sitting here in the morning to read the scriptures.

She had barely slept last night either. Closing her eyes and spending a quiet moment recalling Carson’s face was the only way Ines could maintain her peace.

“Miss, I’ve brought you something simple to eat.”

It was a light meal of soft bread that Ines loved, served with the sweet cream found only in Landhill. Her mother tended to sleep late in the mornings, so everyone in Ines’s family usually had a simple breakfast on their own.

“Thank you.”

Each time Ines said thank you, Susan’s cheeks flushed slightly.

She took a bite of the bread, and its fluffy texture and sweet aroma filled her mouth. It melted gently on her tongue, soothing the sharp edges of her mind that had been frayed by nightmares. Looking into the distance, she saw the sky higher than yesterday, dotted here and there with clouds.

“Susan, it’s so peaceful.”

“Yes, it really is.”

“It’s all thanks to him.”

“Who?”

“My lord.”

“Oh…”

Susan sighed, her face now even redder than before. The young lady, who had asked her to find a portrait, was already talking about the lord first thing in the morning—it was clear Susan was thinking along different lines.
