As Carson nearly reached the door, Andrew came to his senses and hurried over to escort him.

“Oh, I’d prefer if your daughter saw him off.”

“Huh? Ah, yes. Ines!”

“See the lord off,” her father said, his lips trembling faintly from tension.

Thick greenery blanketed the garden of Ines’s house.

It wasn’t a large or lavish garden, but as an old noble family, their ornamental trees were thick and sturdy. Looking around, he even spotted a swing suitable for a small child. What had she been thinking while swinging there?

He glanced at the top of the head of the woman walking demurely beside him and briefly imagined her childhood.

“Have you ever left the territory?”

Ines shook her head.

“Is there no place you’d like to visit?”

“Have you, my lord, experienced many places?”

She answered his question with another—she’d simply never given it much thought.

“I’ve visited countless countries. And I’ve realized something.”

“What is it?”

“That I need someone.”
