Ines looked at the commoner knight sitting before her, whose gentle features seemed familiar. Joseph Benoah—the man she had believed she would never see again, the man who had met death by her hand and whose charred, pitiful corpse had supposedly been found in the mountains.

He had been a commoner who volunteered as a soldier and was later promoted to knighthood in recognition of his skill.

Imperial knights were divided into those who rose from common birth and those born of nobility. Though their names weren’t formally distinguished, there was a clear limit to how high a commoner could climb within the knighthood.

Once, Ines had genuinely admired and supported his relentless drive and ambition for success.

“Isn’t this boring for you?”

Ines stared blankly at Joseph, who spoke to her with formal respect, and barely managed to lift the corners of her lips into a smile.

“No.”

“Don’t say that. To the precious only daughter of a viscount, this must sound terribly dull.”

Indeed, as he said, the story was dull—but not because Ines was the viscount’s only daughter. Rather, it was because she had endured far too much over a long stretch of time.

His warm wheat-colored hair and pale blue eyes sparkled with kindness.

Joseph Benoah had once been a hired servant in her household. Looking back, he had quit his duties at the estate far too abruptly.

He often visited the Swenden household where he used to work, sneaking conversations with Ines behind the master’s back before leaving again. For her, who rarely had chances to step outside, the tales Joseph brought from the world beyond were endlessly fascinating.

“That can’t be.”

Twelve years ago, Ines had given exactly the same reply. She had loved this lively, spirited young man, who was five years her senior.

True to a woman who had fallen in love despite differences in status, she remembered every moment with Joseph in vivid detail. At her response, Joseph broke into a wide smile.

The way his hair swayed slightly in the breeze, the moment his pale eyes focused, and his perfectly symmetrical smile—all remained unchanged, not a single detail altered.

It was hard to imagine this man as the one who had grinned coldly while watching her die in their final moments.

“Your birthday is coming up soon, isn’t it?”

Instead of answering, Ines simply nodded. On her birthday, Joseph would propose to her.

But they couldn’t marry right away—her father had opposed the union fiercely.

Eventually, after more than a year had passed and she turned twenty-one, they finally married and started a household. Yet they didn’t even get to enjoy six months together before Joseph Benoah died.

No—before he faked his death.

“Please make sure to spare me some time that day.”

Ines couldn’t answer immediately and merely gazed at him for a moment. It had been three days since she’d first met him again after returning to the past.

When she saw him young once more, Ines felt strangely numb—no emotion stirred within her. After all this time, Joseph had long been a dead man to her.

“Of course.”

Now, he would rise from his seat, turn with the courtesy befitting a knight, and after taking a few steps, say something like:

“Oh, I’ve become a knight for that earl’s house.”

And then she would leap from her seat and rush to him. It was already remarkable enough for a commoner to become a knight.

Though nothing in the law forbade it, custom held more terrifying power than any law. And yet, he had become a knight for an earl’s family.

Back then, Ines had praised his greatness, forgetting all about their difference in status as she threw her arms around him.

Her words—“You truly are an amazing person”—had surely been filled with pride.

But now, she neither leapt from her seat nor ran to him.

“That’s good news. You’d better go now.”

For the first time, Ines saw the mask slip from Joseph’s face in response to her changed behavior. Then, what exactly had Joseph Benoah, who always wore a mask before her, truly wanted from her?

“Aren’t you going to ask… which house it is?”

That question hadn’t existed twelve years ago. Back then, when Ines had curiously asked which earl’s house he served, he had avoided answering, saying he’d tell her later. He had always been like that.

“If it’s an earl’s house, it must be splendid… Anyway, it really is good news.”

Of course, Ines already knew which house it was.

The Graham Earldom—the current lord of Lesonia, who claimed leadership of the Imperial faction.

And the very house her father, Viscount Swenden, served loyally from nearby.

Ines fell into thought as she looked at Joseph before her. Clearly, when she had been released from prison, the lord of Lesonia hadn’t been Earl Graham.

Carson von Raymond.

Prince Carson of the Empire, who had saved her from the brink of death, had undoubtedly been the ruler of that land. Just thinking of him brought Ines a brief moment of inner peace.

“What are you thinking about so deeply?”

At the unpleasant voice interrupting her peace, Ines briefly furrowed her brow. But she quickly composed her expression and smiled at Joseph.

“You must be busy—go on now.”

“Why are you so eager to send me away today?”

“I’m just… a bit tired.”

Though Joseph tilted his head at her obvious dismissal, he turned away without showing further reaction. Watching him walk off, Ines sank into thought once more.

Then, exactly when had the lordship of Lesonia changed to Carson von Raymond—the man who had saved her from the lake? Having spent ten years in prison, she had little information to go on.

It had already been a week since Ines returned to the past. She had carefully retraced every moment, yet she couldn’t shake the feeling that she kept missing something vitally important.

Carson von Raymond was the son of the Emperor’s fourth wife.

The Emperor had thirteen sons and eight daughters—all born only to women officially recognized as his wives.

Among them, Carson was the Emperor’s eighth son and tenth child. From a young age, the Emperor had kept Carson, who was wiser than his other sons, close at hand and treated him like an extension of himself. Yet Carson was certain the Emperor wouldn’t even remember which number son he was.

Today was the monthly occasion when all the Emperor’s children, wives, and the Empress gathered for a meal.

Though called a family dinner, Carson’s seat was at the very end of the lowest tier—so far away he couldn’t even properly see the Emperor’s face, let alone hear his voice.

Normally, he would have invented any excuse to avoid attending, but today he absolutely had to be present.

Several months had passed since he turned twenty-one. Most imperial princes secured suitable positions and hurriedly left the palace before even reaching thirteen, but Carson hadn’t been able to do so.

Today was the day he would formally receive his title. He longed to escape this loathsome imperial court as soon as possible.

“Your Majesty.”

Once everyone was seated, Carson was predictably granted the right to speak first. He slowly stepped down to the platform beneath the Emperor and took his place.

“Yes, Carson, my son.”

The Emperor gazed down at his son—taller by a head and more robustly built than his other children—with a practiced smile.

Beneath his high, straight nose, his stubbornly closed lips exuded nobility. His smooth forehead, curving gracefully beneath jet-black hair, completed an air of innate dignity.

And those eyes.

His golden eyes, which proclaimed his dominion, resembled either those of the forest’s fiercest beast or the fragile gaze of a delicate artist.

Though he seemed to keep quiet like the other princes, his natural presence and charisma couldn’t be hidden. His striking appearance captivated everyone’s attention, and his competence in handling affairs was exceptional.

Once granted a title and sent to his domain, his life would effectively end there—not at the bottom, but certainly with no chance of rising higher.

“What a waste.”

Though the Emperor never openly favored him, the Empress knew his true feelings well enough, even if he kept them hidden.

In the ordinary world, someone overwhelmingly talented becomes an object of awe. But the imperial court was different. Exceptionally gifted imperial blood inevitably became a target.

The Empress had borne two sons and two daughters. Naturally, her eldest son had ascended to the position of Crown Prince. Her second son, already at fourteen, had received a dukedom and settled not far from the capital.

While a dukedom was standard for an Emperor’s son, all available positions had already been filled, so the Emperor granted earldoms to his remaining sons.

Everyone present knew full well that the nobles openly mocked the imperial family for this.

“It is time for me to leave the imperial court, Your Majesty.”

The Emperor had forcibly kept Carson at court until now.

Of course, there had been excuses—numerous matters in minor provincial domains required his attention, and many imperial affairs abroad needed his oversight.

Since he had accomplished the most among all his sons, the Emperor could justify keeping him close by claiming there was always more work to assign.

But recently, the Empress’s actions had grown suspicious. Ever since Carson successfully negotiated trade with the small overseas nation of Yamanta, the Empress had openly moved to restrain him.

“Has it really come to that already?”

After a long pause, the Emperor feigned ignorance with theatrical surprise. The Empress lightly scraped the edge of her plate with her knife. Catching a glimpse of her plate, the Emperor stiffened his neck and swallowed hard.

“Well then, do you have any preferences in mind?”

It was a pointless question, but ceremony was always necessary in the imperial court.

“I shall be content with whatever duty Your Majesty entrusts to me.”

Carson offered the textbook reply. But the Emperor didn’t know—one unspoken agreement had already been made between Carson and the Empress.

Male lead is reincarnated to save his wife

I’ve also read this one twice already. The female lead is kinda soft and gets embarrassed easily—not really my type, but the plot is definitely worth reading. Hurry up and read it, y’all!

Intro

When Shen Yuan encountered Su Jin again in his previous life, she had already become the Prime Minister of the current dynasty. As for him, the former top young master of the capital, he had long since fallen into the abyss, becoming a singer on a pleasure boat.

After a song ended, he was redeemed and sent to the Su Residence.

Su Jin respected and cherished him, gave him a roof over his head, and bestowed him with warmth. Shen Yuan fell deeper and deeper, but before he could express his feelings, Su Jin passed away.

Shen Yuan died to follow her in death, but instead, he returned to when he was fifteen years old.

At that time, he was not yet engaged, and Su Jin was just a poor scholar.

Shen Yuan gritted his teeth, casting aside all his pride, and thought of ways to coax and entice her every day.

The colder and more indifferent Su Jin was towards him, the more proactive Shen Yuan became.

He was not afraid of being mocked by the world, only wanting to marry his Wife-master early, to hold her hand and never let go for a lifetime.

[Note: This story will not specifically point out the male lead’s reincarnation time point; it’s all in the details. Whenever you feel that the male lead is acting strangely, he has most likely been reincarnated.]
