Carson appeared calm and composed as he sat attending to his duties, yet strangely, his mind had been restless since morning. Just then, Noah entered and relayed a message from the imperial palace. Only then did he realize why his thoughts had been so tangled all day.

“May I have your permission?”

Noah asked while organizing the documents Carson had been reviewing. Not long ago, Count Raymond had sent a letter directly to the Empress herself.

Instead of answering, Carson placed the Empress’s reply on the desk—a clear indication that Noah was allowed to read it. Watching Noah begin to peruse the letter, Carson soon excused himself to change into attire suitable for the banquet.

As he walked, Carson admitted to himself that he had been eagerly awaiting the Empress’s letter. That was why his heart had been unsettled for days without reason.

Noah caught up to him at some point and spoke again.

“So the Empress readily granted your request.”

The word “readily” didn’t quite fit—but she likely had no choice but to agree.

“The matter of noble families’ territorial rights isn’t simple, yet it was resolved so quickly.”

“Indeed.”

Though he replied casually, Carson had desperately wanted a definitive answer from the Empress before the day ended. Fortunately, the letter had arrived right on time.

“Pass a message to Lady Swenden to meet me privately after the banquet.”

“Yes, understood.”

“Don’t call her too openly—people might misunderstand.”

“Yes. But what exactly did you write that brought such a swift reply?”

“I merely wrote that I received the gift sent to Corneo Square.”

Noah couldn’t hide his astonishment. Until now, Carson had never once defied the Empress’s words or commands. To openly accuse her as the culprit was naturally shocking.

“Is that really true?”

“And that wasn’t all.”

Carson had also mentioned Léna Marière to the Empress.

He’d written that although the words of someone already dead held no power, they might still grant strength to those who heard them.

The Empress, upon reading that letter, had probably laughed scornfully.

His mother was gone, and his younger sibling was now in his hands. Having already become the lord of a territory, he was no longer immediately within her grasp.

Of course, he was still bound by the Empress’s influence. By provoking her, he would surely pay a price. Yet during his twenty-one years in the imperial court, Carson hadn’t been idle either.

“What else did you say?”

“You’ll be busy from now on.”

Noah shivered briefly, recalling the Empress’s piercing gaze. Though he had many more questions about what “busy” might entail, he first needed to extinguish the fire at his feet. While Carson received assistance from maidservants to prepare himself, Noah hastened the banquet arrangements.

As the sun rose to its zenith, nobles began gathering one by one from all corners of the territory. Though the main banquet was scheduled for the afternoon, the lord’s manor opened its doors at noon. The garden was already crowded with nobles eager to make an early impression on the lord.

Soft music flowed through the garden, mingling with the guests’ laughter. At first glance, it seemed peaceful, yet everyone was tense. After all, unless one was a noble of the capital, seeing royalty up close was no easy matter.

Among them, the most anxious was Ines, who occupied a quiet corner of the garden.

She couldn’t sit still at the thought of seeing him again. Of course, her time with Carson would be extremely brief—perhaps limited only to the formal greetings as nobles took turns paying their respects. Yet despite knowing this, Ines’s heart remained unsettled all day.

Joseph Bunoa would be attending the banquet today.

After his proposal and his ambiguous return—neither granted nor denied—Joseph had repeatedly requested to meet Ines. Each time, however, she had refused, citing her father’s increased surveillance.

And just yesterday, Joseph had sent another letter, informing her that he would be attending the banquet.

There were few ways for a common-born knight to gain entry to such a reception. Most likely, he had accompanied the Lord of Lusonia as part of his escort detail.

When the sunlight began to feel slightly harsh, Carson appeared in the garden. Ines watched him from afar, never approaching closely, yet always maintaining enough distance to keep him within her sight.

“Ines.”

At that moment, a familiar voice called her name.

‘Joseph…’

As Ines silently mouthed his name and composed her expression, he seized her wrist and led her to a spot beyond the guests’ view.

The sudden touch of his hand made her feel as if insects were crawling all over her skin. Instinctively, she pulled her hand away and pushed him firmly aside.

“Ines?”

“I was startled.”

“Oh—my apologies. I was just so happy to see you.”

He turned to face her, dressed as always in knightly attire. Ines simply stared silently at the apologetic Joseph, causing his expression to instantly shift to one of hurt and sadness.

She had once loved his innocent, pure-hearted passion. But at this very moment, his unfiltered, unrestrained display of emotion made her stomach turn.

“Am I not welcome to you, Ines?”

“…Of course you are.”

“Then why?”

Perhaps finding nothing truly objectionable in her behavior, Joseph couldn’t finish his sentence. A few secluded spots, hidden beneath dense trees, dotted the shaded corners of the garden. Ines scanned her surroundings carefully, as if checking whether anyone might be watching.

“I understand your feelings, but I dislike such reckless approaches. If my father were to see us like this, I might not even be allowed outside anymore.”

“But I simply couldn’t find any other way to meet you.”

“Can’t you wait just a little—for the sake of all the days we’ll share together?”

Though his face remained crestfallen, he nodded in agreement. Then, almost immediately, his eyes gleamed with adoration as he took in her appearance.

“You look truly beautiful today. That dress matches your eyes perfectly, Ines.”

Ines’s expression finally twisted in irritation.

She had worn this dress specifically to express her gratitude to Carson Raymond. Thus, more than hearing she was beautiful, she had wanted his opinion first.

Unable to endure another moment with him, she shifted her weight onto her toes, ready to leave.

“Thank you, but I really must go now.”

“So soon?”

As Ines turned to leave, Joseph grabbed her wrist again. Reflexively, she slapped his hand away.

“Joseph, don’t.”

Joseph stared for a moment at his empty hand suspended in the air. For a fleeting instant, his expression turned cold—but just as quickly, he resumed his gentle demeanor as if nothing had happened.

“We’ll meet again once it gets dark, won’t we?”

She rubbed her wrist where he’d held it, steadying her emotions. She couldn’t afford to let him notice her true state any further. Smiling brightly, Ines turned to him.

“Of course. I heard there’s a rear garden at the lord’s manor. Let’s meet there later.”

“What time?”

“I can’t say exactly. I should go now.”

Without waiting for his acknowledgment, Ines immediately walked away.

The Lord of Lusonia arrived at the banquet accompanied by his daughter instead of his son.

Carson was royal before he was a lord. Thus, it was only proper for Count Graham, a servant of the Empire, to bring his entire household to pay their respects.

Lusonia, bordering the sea, was clearly a far larger territory than Landhill, and its farmland was more extensive compared to Landhill’s mountainous terrain. For quite some time, Lusonia had behaved as though Landhill were merely a dependency of its own domain.

Bringing his daughter instead of his heir apparent was practically an arrogant declaration that even the future lord of Lusonia need not personally greet the Lord of Landhill.

Count Graham’s daughter was a striking beauty with fiery red hair and dark eyes. And right beside her stood Joseph Bunoa, clinging close. Only then did Ines realize Joseph must have come as the young lady’s personal guard.

The banquet proceeded in a natural, relaxed manner. Though it was the host’s duty to welcome guests by adorning the garden, the nobles themselves had prepared the banquet hall.

Though the hall was small and the atmosphere modest, Carson could tell the nobles had prepared the reception with great care.

Though Carson hadn’t orchestrated it himself, the spot where he stood had been arranged as though for a royal audience.

Merely standing atop a single dais, his towering height compelled everyone else to look up at him. Nobles lined up one after another, awaiting their turn to greet him.

The Swenden viscount and his family, including Ines, were no exception. Because her father had been delayed by urgent business, she had to wait a long while before her turn to meet him.

Gentle music filled the hall, and one by one, nobles who had finished their greetings dispersed to enjoy the banquet.

Just as the noble family ahead of Ines approached Carson to pay their respects, the Lord of Lusonia stepped forward, placing his daughter prominently at his side. Overwhelmed by a sudden wave of displeasure, Ines furrowed her brow sharply.

This was the first time Ines had seen Count Graham’s face directly. His mustache was perfectly asymmetrical, set upon a gaunt face with narrow, elongated eyes. The color of his pupils, veiled as if behind a cloudy film, was difficult to describe precisely.

“Count Raymond, your banquet today is truly splendid.”

Standing nearby, Ines could hear Count Graham’s words clearly.

“No need for such praise…”

Carson answered without looking at him, instead extending his hand toward the person standing before him to offer a handshake. It was the bystanders who grew uneasy, sensing the cold tension between the two men.

“I’ve brought my daughter with me today.”

“I can see that without your saying so.”

Though Carson’s refusal to even meet his gaze must have been offensive, Count Graham continued speaking with feigned nonchalance, as if entirely unaffected by the slight.

One-line summary: Male lead chases female lead. The male lead’s love is a bit sick, an invincible love brain.

Synopsis

During a voyage at sea, Jiang Yang accidentally captures a merman.

Servant: I heard that mermen are fierce and brutal.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman obediently rubbing her palm like a puppy: “You call this fierce and brutal?”

Servant: I heard that mermen have no human nature.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman with wet puppy eyes, obsessively calling her ‘A Yang’ like a childish infant: “You call this having no human nature?”

With great difficulty, she releases the merman back into the sea and returns to shore.

Who would have thought that in less than half a month, the merman, who should have been freely wandering in the South China Sea, would shed his scales, endure the pain of losing his tail, transform into human legs, and come ashore to find her?

He kneels at her feet, rubbing her palm, with merman tears rolling down: “A Yang, don’t abandon me.”
