Marcus gave a bitter smile, as if he understood all too well.

“In truth, it’s a feeling I should have already let go of. But I just couldn’t manage it.”

For some reason, Ines didn’t want to apologize to him. It wasn’t anyone’s fault to hold feelings for someone and then withdraw them.

“Have you decided to accept their feelings?”

“I feel it’s hardly appropriate for me to say I’m ‘accepting’ such feelings. But at the moment, no other words come to mind.”

When Ines smiled brightly, he followed suit. After a long silence, he raised his voice slightly, as if having made a decision.

“Everyone might try to dissuade you, Ines. They’ll say you’re taking a difficult path.”

Behind him hung the round sun. Beneath it, Marcus’s red hair still shimmered like light scattering from the sun itself.
