“Didn’t you like it?”

“Why would that be? It went very well with today’s dress. But I couldn’t possibly wear it.”

“Why?”

“I thought I might lose it.”

“Ah…….”

“Since it’s a gift bestowed by Your Highness, I’ll keep it as a family treasure.”

“Don’t do that.”

“Yes?”

“No, what I mean is……. a necklace is most valuable when it’s fulfilling its purpose.”

“Ah, I was shortsighted.”

When she sighed briefly, he chuckled.

“That’s not what I mean.”

“…….”

“So, wear it the next time we meet. I want to see if it really matches the color of your eyes.”

“Next time…….”

At that time, Emma knocked on the office door, announcing that she had prepared the tea.

“The maids are all in the banquet hall, so I’m later than usual. Sorry.”

In response to Emma’s words, Ines answered naturally as she had the last time.

“Thank you, Emma.”

Carson thought he couldn’t understand this woman. Could a woman who just witnessed her lover’s betrayal be so composed?

But he shook his head to dismiss the thought. Having excessive emotions about her wouldn’t be good.

Clearing his head, he brought up the main topic.

“Actually, I had planned to ask you to meet separately today.”

She looked at him with sparkling eyes. Somehow feeling his throat dry, he gulped down a sip of the tea Emma had brought.

“Lena Marier.”

“…….”

“I heard she was very helpful in changing that woman’s mind.”

“Did Lena change her mind?”

Is calling someone’s name intimately this woman’s habit?

“Jason, a young son by the name, had one.”

“Jason…….”

“Earl Graham was holding him hostage to silence Lena.”

“Did you save him?”

As Carson nodded, Ines visibly sighed in relief.

“You knew, didn’t you?”

“What are you talking about?”

“That Earl Graham was behind it.”

Ines shut her mouth, seemingly very surprised, and he got up. Walking straight to a cabinet at one end of the office, he took out the biggest bottle of alcohol.

Ines seemed to know more than he thought. He approached Ines, handed her a glass, and poured it full.

“Now it’s time for us to be a bit more honest.”

Holding the glass, Ines stared at the pumpkincolored liquid sloshing to the edge, swallowing hard. He gave her a moment to think.

“I heard that Lena died in a fire.”

“It’s a false rumor. She’s still in this mansion’s secret room. Along with her child.”

“That’s a good thing.”

“I’m thinking of hiding her existence for now.”
“Why? Lena might testify that everything was probably the Earl of Graham’s doing.”

“I’m not ready yet.”

Carson didn’t face her, holding his glass of wine, and walked towards the window. Meanwhile, Ines gulped down her drink.

“Earlier, did you come in thinking that there would be two people in that lounge?”

“That’s right, but if you’re asking if I knew about the relationship between the two, then no.”

“The name of that escort knight….”

“Joseph, Joseph Brnoa. I only found out today that Joseph is working as Graham’s escort.”

Carson thought she might hold back to hide their relationship, but Ines’s attitude went against his expectations. He decided not to beat around the bush and try to sidetrack her anymore. Taking his eyes off the garden spread outside the window, Carson turned back to Ines.

“Your lover… is that right? You’ve promised to marry.”

At the word ‘lover,’ Ines giggled.

“Yes, that’s right.”

She didn’t even ask him how he knew that fact. As if it were natural for him to know everything.

“You must be very upset.”

“No, I’m fine. More than that, I’m just curious as to why those two mentioned His Highness’s name earlier.”

Though she tried not to show it outwardly, Ines wasn’t the least bit upset about Joseph’s betrayal. Of course, she knew that she should at least pretend to be trembling with anguish now. But she had no intention of fabricating lies in front of Carson.

Thanks to her entry into the lounge just before, she knew more than she thought. Of course, she was not unmoved by Joseph and Lady Graham’s relationship. But compared to what he would do in the future, that was a very minor issue.

“It’s probably because of the fact that I informed Earl Graham today.”

“The fact that my family no longer belongs to Lesonia seems to be a big problem for Earl Graham. The Earl’s haste to go to the capital must be to inform His Majesty the Emperor, right?”

“The Empress.”

“Yes?”

“Earl Graham probably went to see the Empress, not the Emperor.”

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
