Carson’s head tilted slightly to the right.
“There’s no medicine. Just like there’s no medicine for nightmares.”
“…….”
“To put it simply… it could be considered a daytime nightmare.”
Carson tightly clenched his empty, warmth-depleted hand. He couldn’t ask any further.
Was she implying that he could do something if her nightmares continued? He couldn’t eliminate the two years left in the temple either.
He found it hardest to endure powerlessness more than anything in the world. What then made him any different from his father?
“I didn’t want to show you this side of me….”
“If you’re going to apologize, don’t.”
Ines bit her lower lip, as if hit right on the mark.
“If I hadn’t seen you today, you wouldn’t have told me anything.”
Having been forbidden to apologize, Ines couldn’t give any response.
“Even if you face danger somewhere, there’ll be repeated days where I won’t even know something happened to you.”
She suddenly thought he was suffering, as if a merciful god couldn’t turn away from human suffering. Therefore, she had to ask.
“Would you prefer I tell you everything?”
He couldn’t bear to see her suffer any longer.
“Yes. Don’t hide anything from me.”
Although it was desperate to know he couldn’t go to save Ines, he didn’t want to live in ignorance. At the very least, Carson wanted to assure her that he remembered what she was going through.
“I promise I’ll do just that. But, My Lord…”
“Why?”
“You must meet me again in two years.”
Even though he was not the type to renege on his word, today’s events made Ines insist on a reaffirmation. Breathing in the same space with him was the only luxury she could afford.
Despite the certainty that he would agree, her heart thumped. One word from him and her two years would oscillate between heaven and hell.
Finally hearing his agreement, the distant sound of a bell ringing reached them.
The eight bell tolls signaling their meeting had long passed.
“I must go now.”
With a single word to the high priest, Ines could have stayed with him today. But he didn’t do so. All that remained in his wake was her.
So Carson committed to faithfully playing the role of her shadow until the end.
“Very well.”
He stood up and extended his arm, showing the decorum a nobleman would to a noblewoman.
“Let’s go, Lady Ines Swalden. I’ll escort you to your destination.”
At that familiar yet distant demeanor, she laughed out loud.
“Thank you, Count Raymond.”
Carson escorted her right to the door. As the door opened, Ines broke away from him.
“From here on, I’m just maid Ines.”
And then, like a woman who had lived her whole life as a maid, she slightly bent her body.
Stepping outside, it was still bright.
As Ines headed towards the dining hall, he followed her from a slight distance. Carson kept looking down at her. The woman who wore heels in Randhill now wore very low and comfortable shoes.
This made her prominently rising forehead and rosy cheeks even more pronounced.
Suddenly, it felt like her gaze twinkled with meaning, even carrying a light smile.
He slowly followed her gaze to see that red-haired man standing there.
Carson halted in his tracks.
“Did you know him already?”
“Excuse me?”
His tone, unfamiliar to her, naturally drew her eyes upwards.
“The person caught at the edge of your gaze just now.”
“Ah…”
His once direct gaze tilted slowly, meeting eyes with Ines. His golden eyes had an unclear yet sharp gleam.
“I saw you two talking face to face earlier.”
“When…?”
“You were even wearing the clothes he had given you in the training hall.”
In a never-before-seen expression, Ines felt as if something dull was scratching at her heart. While she was trying to gauge Carson’s feelings, he suddenly leaned in.
“Who is that man?”
Startled by the approaching man, she took a big step back from him. But Carson didn’t allow the distance. Stretching out his arm, he supported her back and pulled her tightly against him.
“Speak quickly. Or else, who knows what I might do.”
“Marcus Knights.”
His brow furrowed at the name she hurriedly spat out.
“Marcus Knights…?”
“The knight of your lordship’s castle, the one I slashed with my sword.”
“Ahh.” Even as he sighed as if remembering, he didn’t lessen the grip on the arm that held her.
Somehow, Ines began to feel uncomfortable. When had she ever felt this way in his arms? Though surprised by her own transformation, she knew she had to get away from him immediately.
“Could you please let go of my arm…”
He too raised an eyebrow, as if finding Ines’s request odd.
“Why?”
“People are passing by.”
“When did you start caring about such things?”
Carson’s words were true, so she said nothing and just glanced around. A moment later, he chuckled and released her. Ines absentmindedly adjusted her clothes and started walking again.
“But Ines, don’t get too close to that Jochi.”
“Ah? Why…?”
“Don’t you know?”
Ines genuinely didn’t know and shook her head. Seeing her clueless expression, Carson burst into hearty laughter.
“It’s obvious, he’s going to become a priest.”
With that, he walked ahead of Ines.
My Arch-enemy Sealed My Memory and Said That He is My Husband
This is an incredibly captivating story that you absolutely shouldn’t miss! I’ll give a brief introduction here, and below you’ll find a detailed synopsis of the plot.
The female lead is a fierce and powerful demon king. The male lead is a once-in-a-millennium celestial lord, admired by the entire cultivation world.
They are equally matched, legendary rivals who have battled for centuries.
In the final duel, the female lead is gravely injured. The male lead saves her, seals her memories, and hides her true identity. He tells her that he is her fiancé. His entire life has been flawless—except for the one thing he never expected, never controlled, and never wanted to control: falling for his greatest enemy. She is his inner demon, his obsession.
When the female lead regains her memories, she is furious at his deception.
She makes his life a living hell.
And somehow, the male lead—possibly a total masochist—doesn’t mind at all. In fact, he’s happy she’s paying attention to him.
Yep, we’re back to my favorite trope: male lead suffering. If you love this kind of story, jump into the pit with me now!!!
Intro
Dong Xia lost her memory.
Her handsome and extremely powerful fiancé Li Qing comforted her: “It’s okay if you can’t remember. I’ll always be with you.”
Everyone thought Dong Xia’s ancestors must have burned incense to get such a perfect fiancé. He was the number one person in the immortal realm, yet he remained chaste and only loved her.
…
The day before marrying her fiancé, Dong Xia finally remembered everything.
She wasn’t suffering from memory loss at all.
Her arch-enemy had made her fake her death, destroyed her cultivation, replaced her memories, and pretended to be her deeply in love fiancé.
No wonder he said, “It’s okay if you can’t remember”!
Dong Xia laughed coldly as she pulled out her long knife: Li Qing, prepare to die 🙂
*
Li Qing, as the supreme being of the immortal realm, was the people’s shining beacon.
The only unknown stain in his life was his affection for Dong Xia, the ruler of the demon realm.
In the final battle of the war between immortals and demons, the sky collapsed and the earth shattered. The ruler of the demon realm was finally slain under the sword of the supreme being of the immortal realm, and everyone in the immortal realm applauded.
The cultivation world lost a ruler of the demon realm.
And in the back mountain of Li Qing’s cave dwelling, he secretly hid away a fiancée.
Notes:
1. The female lead is white on the outside, black on the inside, and the queen of flattery; the male lead repeatedly tests the edge of darkness, a VIP guest at the crematorium.
2. Fantasy cultivation world setting.
