Leonard pondered for just a brief moment before speaking.

“There’s no other way. I’ll have to borrow the funds from Shalys Guild.”

“What? Isn’t Shalys Guild run by those notoriously infamous loan sharks? Are you really going to borrow money from them?”

Gordon asked, eyes wide with shock. Leonard replied in a cold voice.

“Where did you pick up that insolent habit of talking back to your master, you servant? Do you wish to be thrown out of this mansion?”

“N-no! I’m sorry, Viscount.”

“Tch, get out!”

Leonard waved him away, and Gordon bowed deeply before quickly leaving the room. Leonard watched the servant’s retreating back with a look of clear displeasure.

“That paltry sum will easily be repaid—and then some—by Christine’s dowry once we’re married. Damn it all. If only Danae hadn’t tempted me like this…”

Yes, he simply had to marry her somehow. Then she would fix everything Danae had ruined and restore both his family and the Uston name once more. She loved him, and for the man she loved, she would willingly sacrifice anything.

Yet, for some reason, he kept feeling increasingly uneasy.

Growing restless, he recalled Duke Haven, who had recently been getting close to her. Haven was one of only three dukes in the entire empire—taller by half a head, a Swordmaster, and blessed with the handsome features that combined the best traits of his late father, the former Duke Haven, and Princess Liz, once hailed as the empire’s most beautiful couple. Thinking of that man—who seemed to possess everything as though blessed by the gods—stirred a boiling sense of inferiority deep within him.

Leonard fumed with frustration: aside from the deep ties between their families and the fact that she loved him, he had absolutely no advantage over Haven. The mere thought that, while he delayed, Haven might steal her heart away filled him with indescribable dread. Lost in thought, he stared blankly into the empty air, his eyes darkened.

“I must make her mine as soon as possible…”
