As he and I boarded the carriage one after the other, it began moving slowly. I turned toward the Duke, who was gazing out the window with his arms crossed, and spoke up.

“Was there anyone following the Prince or me? How were Marquis Uston and Danae behaving?”

“Well, apparently, those two stayed at the mansion the whole time.”

“Did you properly compensate the fisherman? I gave him gold coins, after all.”

“Yes.”

The Duke answered my question curtly. I frowned slightly. He seemed somehow uncomfortable—and even slightly irritated. I asked him directly.

“Your Grace, are you perhaps angry with me? If so, please just be honest.”

The Duke shook his head and replied,

“No. What reason would I have to be angry with you?”

“Then why have you kept acting like this since earlier? You won’t even meet my eyes during our conversation, and you reply to every question with just a word or two.”
