How To Escape From A Devilish Husband (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 12
“Young mistress! You mustn’t run so unladylike!”
Ignoring Anna’s shocked cry, Delphine kept running anyway.
From the window of her private chamber, the entrance of the mansion was visible.
Delphine hurried to the window and stood there, her face tense as she watched the man’s back receding into the distance like a tiny dot.
This is strange. Something’s off.
Just moments ago, they’d exchanged lies with each other.
The document he picked up was one she herself had verified.
It was a document already signed and approved a week ago.
“…No matter how I think about it, something’s definitely wrong.”
Once she confirmed the man had completely left the mansion, Delphine hastily summoned the maids.
But the result was the same.
Everyone stationed at the front door and hallway claimed they hadn’t seen him.
The study was on the third floor of the mansion.
There was no way to reach the third floor without passing through the main entrance and central staircase.
Could her loyal maids really be lying to her?
She briefly entertained the thought, but deemed it unlikely.
After all, even the other servants working at the entrance had reacted as if they’d seen a ghost when the man descended from the third floor.
“Didn’t the master leave at the crack of dawn again today?”
And what about the book? What was that reaction just now?
Delphine chewed her lips anxiously, then urgently called for her faithful butler.
“Wilson.”
“Yes, madam. You called?”
“Our library definitely had a book titled ‘Traces of Ancient Demons and the Study of Exorcism.’ Could you find it for me?”
“Yes, I’ll see to it at once.”
Wilson had served at Pembroke Mansion since her father’s time.
After a brief hesitation, Delphine asked again.
“And… is there a secret passage in this mansion leading directly to the third-floor corridor without going through the main entrance?”
“Not to my knowledge.”
Wilson shook his head firmly.
Delphine wrapped her arms around herself as if to ward off the eerie, uncanny feeling creeping over her.
This is strange. Far too strange.
It felt as though she’d suddenly been thrown into a marionette theater, manipulated by unseen strings.
She could almost see invisible threads tugging people from behind.
‘Or perhaps… am I the one being controlled?’
Delphine stared down at the garden where irises swayed, her face pale as snow.
[This is the timeline separator]The book was never found.
That book on demons was one of the nation’s officially banned texts—far from something easily obtainable.
Indeed, it was precisely because such a book existing in this peaceful Pembroke Mansion seemed so improbable that Delphine remembered it clearly.
The journal detailing her father’s rebellion, which she’d also been searching for, was equally absent.
Despite thoroughly searching the entire mansion over several days, nothing turned up.
There was nothing left she could do within the mansion.
“Do you have any idea how frightened this old nurse was? Oh, heavens! Rummaging through the study like that!”
Her timid nurse, Anna, had spent days muttering with a hand pressed to her chest.
“Thank goodness the new master is so merciful—otherwise, this would’ve been a real disaster like it would’ve been before!”
“Hmm. You’re right, Anna. It really would’ve been a disaster….”
Delphine, seated in the library, rested her chin in her hand and murmured softly.
Though she’d failed to uncover any clues, this incident had made one fact undeniably clear.
That man had no intention of killing her.
Even if she glared at him suspiciously. Even if she sneaked into his study.

…Then, just how far would he tolerate her?
“Young mistress. Are you listening? Always behave properly and quietly….”
Letting her nurse’s flustered words wash over one ear, Delphine quietly let her emerald eyes gleam.
Then she’d test just how far his patience could stretch.
[This is the timeline separator]The barracks of the Royal Guard, located in Sector 3’s northern quarter.
Having delivered a brief report, Deputy Commander Walter asked cautiously,
“Aren’t you overworking yourself?”
It was already the tenth day.
His superior had been conducting a loud, sweeping operation in Sector 3 as if determined to exterminate the rebels down to the last one.
“…….”
Walter, sensing his superior’s usual silence, finally ventured another remark.
“Is this because of His Majesty’s anger?”
There was good reason for his question.
From the Emperor’s perspective, there was no way he’d look kindly on a Royal Guard Captain who defied his explicit orders to take the daughter of a traitor as his bride.
The Emperor, who once held the Captain as his own protecting blade, had outright banned him from the palace grounds, declaring, “I never want to lay eyes on you for now.”
Rumors flooded the capital that the beautiful daughter of the traitor had been confined to the mansion.
Yet Pride merely let out a faint, dismissive smile as if the notion were utterly absurd.
The Emperor was always fretting—afraid of losing his power, terrified assassins might come for him.
Pride feared no such cowardly old man.
What truly terrified this man, who never flinched before anything, was none other than Pride Mansion itself.
More precisely, the woman quietly residing within his mansion.
His wife.
Pride. Wife.
Before he could rein in his thoughts, they had already galloped toward her.
Her fiery red hair rippling hypnotically, her emerald eyes brighter than sunlight itself—eyes that, when gazing at him with flames mirroring his own soul, always made him……
Wait.
“…So this is why you rushed into marriage so urgently.”
Pride spat out a coarse curse.
Walter, still inside the barracks, flinched involuntarily.
Though hardened by battlefield experience as a knight, Walter was still a noble’s son at heart.
Hearing such vulgar language—utterly unfamiliar and shocking—he carefully addressed his superior by name.
“…Lord Pride?”
But Pride’s attention was already elsewhere.
This was a crisis he’d never anticipated.
Never in his wildest dreams had he imagined he’d lose control over mere lust.
Since the moment he saw her in her wedding dress on their wedding day, his patience—once as solid as stone—had crumbled like a sandcastle and was now barely holding any form at all.
Was this because the fruit of his long restraint now dangled right before his eyes, or was it perhaps……
Pride abruptly stood, his massive frame rising as if to shake off his thoughts.
“…We march.”
“What? But, my lord. The soldiers are exhausted from these continuous operations. They need at least one night of rest…”
“Useless fools.”
Pride growled through clenched teeth, then strode out of the barracks without another word.
“I’ll go alone. Don’t follow.”
Left alone, Walter let out a hollow sigh.
After ten grueling, inhuman days, he’d somehow become “useless” overnight.
He muttered in disbelief.
“…Why has he grown even more sensitive after marriage?”
Only after his superior had left did he finally relax the rigid tension he’d been holding in his body.
It had already been a year since the man known as the Empire’s hero became his commanding officer.

Yet Walter still couldn’t grow accustomed to that overwhelming presence.
Though he’d never felt lacking in courage in his life, meeting that hero always made him feel like a small animal before a predator.
It felt as though he were encountering a being he absolutely shouldn’t have crossed paths with.
Recalling the captain’s cold, ruthless eyes when cutting down enemies, Walter shivered slightly.
What could possibly have disturbed the composure of that icily calm man?
It was strangely fascinating to see his ever-stoic superior display emotion.
After a moment’s thought, Walter resolved the matter with the characteristic simplicity of a knight.
He’d married a great beauty, but it seemed his honeymoon wasn’t going as smoothly as expected.
He then neatly squared the documents scattered across his superior’s desk—
unaware that among them was one single paper, already approved a week ago.
[This is the timeline separator]Late dawn.
As Pride headed toward the private chamber, he muttered inwardly.
So you’re still awake tonight.
His senses, sharper than anyone else’s, told him so clearly even through the door.
Her breathing wasn’t the calm, steady rhythm of sleep.
It was irregular, somewhat tense…
Outside the chamber door, Pride paused briefly, lost in thought.
Should he turn back now, toward the palace or the barracks?
He knew better than anyone that his patience had nearly reached its limit.
In this dark hour of dawn, if he saw her lying alone in bed, could he truly restrain this surging impulse?
A deep breath swelled his broad, muscular chest.
Even his usually cool, chestnut-brown eyes had clouded over.
His thoughts couldn’t go any further.
Without hesitation, he pushed open the chamber door—somewhat roughly.
It wasn’t a decision born of confidence that he could control his instincts.
Rather, he simply no longer possessed the patience required to turn away from this sweet temptation.
Just as expected.
The moment he deliberately made noise entering, she slowly sat up from bed, her breathing uneven.
Pale moonlight poured through the plain curtains, brightly illuminating the candleless room.
Upon the enormous bed fitted to his size, his saintess looked at him, her red hair cascading loose around her shoulders.
Her translucent skin seemed to shimmer faintly in the moonlight.
His heart lurched violently, and Pride hastily sucked in the breath he’d been holding.
But he immediately realized his mistake.
Her scent, already filling the room, flooded his senses like a paralyzing wave.
“You came home late again. You must be very busy these days.”
The woman, unaware of his plight, asked gently.
Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away
This is also on my reread list!
This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.
Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.
But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.
Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.
I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.
The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.
As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
