“Aren’t you concerned about what Count Pashad said?”

Just before the Palace Manager ordered the guards to take him away, Count Pashad left some cryptic words.

He had said there was a reason other than the nonsensical excuse that the Empress had used to expel his wife from the palace. His wife had accidentally discovered a secret the Empress was hiding, and she had been expelled to keep her quiet.

He said it was a very dangerous and vulgar secret. The only person who knew it was his wife.

Yet he himself claimed he didn’t know what the secret was.

“Wouldn’t it explain why Her Majesty suddenly has amnesia?”

“Perhaps.”

Leskal seemed displeased.

“Are you not going to take any action?”

“The Empress is my partner; she’s by my side. What else should I care about?”

“Ah, but you know nothing about Her Majesty. Why she has been avoiding sharing a bed with you, or what her intentions have been for the past four years.”

“Intentions? You think she’s been avoiding sharing a bed with me to see me transform completely into a demon?”

It was an absurd notion.

The fall of the Emperor would mean the fall of the Empress as well. If Leskal turned into a demon, the future of Carthage could not be guaranteed.

“I understand it’s absurd, but Her Majesty is indeed an absurd person. What if she has aligned with a subversive force like Duke Malik?”

“That’s absurd.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“Because the Phoenix has been born.”

“The Phoenix…what?”

Ryan blinked his eyes.

“The Phoenix? So, that means—”

“A part of the heart I gave to my partner. Its birth means we’re bound as one. As you know, there has never been another birth of a Phoenix since the first partner died and the Phoenix disappeared. That was the only time the Phoenix existed in the Empire.”

“Yes, according to the records. But have you seen this Phoenix?”

“The Empress had it with her.”

“Really? And Serven didn’t know?”

“It was still small, about the size of a thumb. It seemed like she was hiding it.”

“Ah…not to notice that, tsk.”

Perhaps that red stone fragment had been an eggshell. It made sense that the birds went berserk when it was stolen.

Ryan momentarily reflected on his foolish actions. If he had casually put that egg in his pocket thinking it was a stone, the Phoenix might never have been born.

“If the Phoenix has been born, then there’s no room for doubt. What then did Count Pashad mean?”

“If he wasn’t lying in front of me, it means the Empress is indeed hiding something.”

“So, you’re saying it doesn’t matter as long as Her Majesty is truly your partner.”

Leskal nodded.

“I have no intention of letting the Empress out of my sight. No matter what she feels, she cannot leave me.”

“Ah, I see…”

Ryan scratched the back of his neck, feeling somewhat frightened.
The demonic blood speaks of my destiny’s companion, so naturally, it would be different from ordinary humans. I wouldn’t be surprised if an ordinary human found it hard to accept.

“I know that the Empress might dislike me for now.”

Rescal abruptly made this remark as he walked a few more steps.

Caught in his thoughts, Liyan scratched his neck with an awkward expression.

“No, she will not. I told you the reason before.”

“I’m certain she doesn’t feel the same way about me. …But in the end, the Empress will like me.”

Liyan scrutinized Rescal’s expression. A faint smile, almost indistinguishable from a neutral face, was visible.

“Is it because the phoenix has been born?”

“Exactly.”

Liyan chuckled, following Rescal’s smile.

“Then I should be grateful. What does the phoenix like, Your Majesty? Should we offer some snacks?”

“No need.”

Rescal’s smile vanished as if washed away. He even furrowed his brow as if annoyed.

“There’s no need for you to be kind. She’s already cheeky enough.”

“Ah, um? It sounds like you dislike the phoenix…”

“I do.”

Rescal stated bluntly.

“Oh my, isn’t the phoenix what connects the two of you?”

“No. It’s part of me. To protect my companion when I’m not there.”

“And you dislike it?”

“I keep it around out of necessity, not willingly.”

“I see.”

Liyan understood why Rescal disliked the phoenix.

‘Ethnic selfhate, I presume.’

The immature phoenix was probably acting like Rescal.

However, the Empress wouldn’t keep her distance from a phoenix that appeared small and cute, unlike Rescal.

‘She might feel like her place is being stolen.’

Liyan chuckled inwardly.

That emotion of dislike must be jealousy.

(This is a time marker.)

And today, finally sharing a bed with the Empress, that jealousy reached its peak.

“Chirp!”

The Empress in her nightgown opened the bedroom door. Rescal understood what it meant to be “on edge” to the last feather.

He undressed, holding his breath, and donned the robe Persun handed him. He couldn’t even remember how he made it to the bed.

“The light will be turned off.”

After turning off the bedroom light, Persun left, giving a courteous, yet currently useless, long farewell.

The room, now empty except for the two of them, was filled with blue moonlight.

His entire body felt like a stone, yet also as if floating on water. He couldn’t breathe properly, to the point where his lungs hurt.

“It seems like it’s going to be a long night.”

The Empress whispered softly.

Clutching his almost bursting heart, Rescal wondered if he could hold her hand.

That was when it happened.

“Chirp!”

The immature, cheeky bird flew in and audaciously nested in the palm of the Empress’s hand.

Ex-husband Wants Reconciliation

One-line summary: Chasing the wife to the crematorium (making an effort to attract someone who has become indifferent), the female lead doesn’t look back, the second male lead takes the position.

Intro:

To repay the kindness of the older generation, Su Mu crossed into a female-dominated world and became a live-in daughter-in-law of the Yan family, single-handedly saving the Yan family from fire and water.

But her husband, Yan Jiyue, the eldest son of the Yan family, treated her with sarcasm and never showed her a good face.

It wasn’t until after Su Mu’s death that this pampered and arrogant young master shed a few fake tears and pretended to want to die for love.

This life’s kindness was enough. If there was a next life, she would definitely kick Yan Jiyue away.

Who knew that the heavens would be so kind as to allow her to be reborn, returning to the time when she had just married into the Yan family.

Su Mu glanced at the Yan eldest son, who still spoke coldly to her, and threw a divorce letter in front of him.

“Let’s divorce!”

***

Yan Jiyue never imagined that he would be reborn. He happily went to find Su Mu, wanting to make up for the mistakes he had made in his ignorant youth.

Wasn’t the reason the heavens allowed him to be reborn to let him reconcile with Su Mu?

But when he pushed open the door to Su Mu’s room, the person lying on the bed was another man.

Su Mu’s personal attendant, Xie Yi.

Yan Jiyue hated him so much that his teeth itched. In front of Su Mu, Xie Yi was a gentle and considerate whisperer of sweet nothings, but in reality, he was vicious-hearted and deliberately sabotaged their husband and wife relationship.

In the previous life, it was he who secretly hid in Su Mu’s coffin and committed suicide, stealing a step ahead of him to be buried with Su Mu.

Yan Jiyue’s eyes were filled with hatred as he cursed, “What kind of thing are you? Your background is lowly, what right do you have to occupy Su Mu?”

Xie Yi looked at the sleeping Su Mu and no longer pretended to be a whisperer of sweet nothings.

He proudly stuck out his belly, “I have the right because my belly is capable of giving the Wife-master a daughter.”

***

Yan Jiyue was consumed with jealousy. He spread rumors that Xie Yi had once been branded with the mark of a “harlot” on his chest.

But on the night Xie Yi cut off the flesh bearing that mark, Su Mu suddenly realized something was amiss.

“How did you know the exact moment I was poisoned? And why did you show up a month early?”

Xie Yi remained silent, blood from his wound soaking through his robes. His sapphire eyes brimmed with anguish – or was it just a flawless act?

Between a once-arrogant husband now seeking redemption, and a gentle soul willing to die for her – who truly held the darkest secrets? And could it be that Su Mu and Yan Jiyue weren’t the only ones given a second chance at life…?
