Casalin’s birth mother passed away early due to a chronic illness, when Casalin was so young that her memories were hazy.

Despite having wealth and honor guaranteed, her father, who lived fiercely as a professor at the Royal School, became somewhat lazy after her mother’s death.

Like those common nobles.

“Casalin. Say hello. This is the person who will be your new mother.”

Her father, who had briefly gone abroad for research purposes, returned with some woman.

Even though to Casalin, the ‘Viscountess Roberfon’ was still her only mother.

The woman who pushed aside the mother still vividly alive in Casalin’s heart and took the place of the viscountess was holding a young child.

That child’s name was Rose.

“She’s a child born with God’s blessing while traveling with the viscount. She’s your sister now, so take good care of her.”

It would be a lie to say that Casalin didn’t dislike her father who was struggling to quickly forget her dead mother, but she couldn’t resent him either.

Casalin, who became the eldest daughter overnight from being an only child, tried to become a mature older sister, though clumsy.

Although the new mother tended to favor Rose, she didn’t mistreat Casalin.

It seemed they could become a family that was at least not bad, even if they couldn’t get close.

Until father passed away due to worsening of injuries sustained during the war.

“Casalin. You must definitely raise our family’s honor. Make sure to bring about the marriage with His Majesty the King. Only then can our Rose become the mistress of a noble family.”

The new mother didn’t do things like an evil stepmother from a third-rate novel, but she burdened Casalin with a sense of responsibility and duty that was perhaps even more painful.

A successful stepping stone for Rose’s success.

Nothing more, nothing less.

“Congratulations. His Majesty the King has chosen Miss Rose Roberfon as the next queen.”

When the court official came to the house and said that, what did Rose think in her heart?

She herself had been very scared and afraid before the wedding.

Did Rose really not know how difficult and precarious the position of a queen of a country was?

.

.

.

“Ugh…”

Casalin, who had been lying face down on the desk, let out a groan as she straightened her stiff back.

She frowned at the morning sunlight pouring through the glass window onto her head.

As she stretched lightly, something fell with a thud under the chair.

It was a blanket.

‘Did a maid come and cover me?’

Whoever it was, I’m really grateful.

Casalin quickly examined the paper on the desk while sweeping back her messy bangs that had fallen over her forehead with one hand.

Judging by the densely written letters, fortunately, it seemed she had fallen asleep after completing the script for Rose’s reading.

It was a moment of gratitude to herself from last night for working diligently.

“Is anyone outside?”

“Yes, Lady Casalin.”

“Could you deliver this to Her Majesty the Queen? Tell her it’s related to the reading. Also, please convey that the preparation time was short, so it might be inadequate, and I would appreciate if she could review it.”

“Understood.”

“Ah, and.”

The maid who had received the paper and was about to leave the room turned back with a “Yes?”

“Was it you who covered me with a blanket last night?”

“No, it wasn’t me…”

“I see. You may go now.”

Casalin tilted her head as she watched the maid’s retreating figure.

Then who could it have been?

[This is the timeline separator]

Being sick was generally difficult, but sometimes it was good.

Her ankle, which wasn’t that hurt to begin with, had long since healed, but Rose decided to enjoy the sympathetic gazes and warm attention pouring in from those around her a bit longer.

Moreover, when she lay down with a pale face, Shalen loved her much more than usual.

‘Being sick is indeed a good thing.’

Crunch.

It was when she was lazily rolling around on the wide bed, biting into a sweet apple slice that the maid had peeled and left for her.

“Your Majesty the Queen. Lady Casalin has sent a document. She said you would know if it’s related to the reading…”

“It’s completed!”

Rose sprang from the bed and snatched the paper from the maid.

Her face brightened like the spring sunshine as soon as she saw the densely written text in elegant handwriting.

‘Indeed, bringing my elder sister in as a lady-in-waiting was an excellent choice.’

I can keep asking for favors like this in the future.

Rose hummed a tune as she read through Casalin’s writing.

It was a series of difficult sentences from beginning to end. There were also foreign words scattered here and there, so she couldn’t fully understand most of the content, but this was enough.

The maid watching from the side conveyed Casalin’s request and asked if it wouldn’t be better to review it more carefully one more time, but Rose shrugged her shoulders, asking what the problem was.

“Our elder sister never makes mistakes. Especially when she’s given tasks like this, she always completes them perfectly. I’m sure she’s written a perfect piece this time too.”

Rose left the room with light steps after finishing her preparations.

Thinking it wouldn’t be bad to call a jeweler to acquire a few more necklaces before the ball, she was crossing the gallery when it happened.

“What a coincidence.”

A deep voice that seemed to scrape the bottom of the sea echoed off the marble walls.

The person who appeared from the opposite corridor was none other than Emperor Parnes.

Though she felt overwhelmed just standing face to face with him, Rose instinctively tensed her shoulders but showed the most beautiful smile she could manage.

“I greet Your Majesty the Emperor. The weather has become quite hot, hasn’t it?”

Surprisingly effective, Parnes raised one eyebrow and lazily smiled back.

Caught off guard by the unexpected friendly response, Rose felt flustered in a good way. Somehow, she felt like she had gotten a little closer to this great man, and her shoulders rose involuntarily.

Didn’t her elder sister also say that specifically requesting her to do the reading ultimately meant he viewed her favorably?

It seemed she might be able to form a not bad friendship with the emperor this spring.

“Have you finished preparing for the reading? The time must have been tight.”

“No. I stayed up all night writing, and it was so educational and interesting that I didn’t realize how time flew by.”

“The Queen of Kan is not only diligent but also cultured.”

Rose covered her mouth and smiled shyly.

“Thank you for giving me such an honorable opportunity. Is it to encourage me, who has just ascended to the position of queen?”

“Well. Rather than encouragement.”

Emperor Parnes briefly cast his gaze towards the distant mountains visible faintly through the window before continuing after a short pause.

“I wanted to know more about you.”

“Pardon?”

Rose’s clear face turned red with bewilderment.

She inadvertently looked around, then rolled her confused eyes trying to understand what he had just said.

Know more about me.

Could this possibly mean… he has that kind of interest in me?

Rose could hardly breathe.

She had promised to devote her life to Shalen, but now even the emperor of a great nation was openly showing interest. She didn’t know what to do.

Perhaps even his earlier kindness towards her elder sister Casalin was actually because he didn’t know how to approach her.

If he first left a good impression on the lady-in-waiting, he could naturally close the distance with her, the mistress.

“I was curious. I thought I needed to know a bit about what kind of nature you have.”

“Nature…?”

To Rose’s puzzled question, Emperor Parnes answered with an incomprehensible gentle smile as he passed by her.

“Well then, I look forward to an excellent reading.”

[This is the timeline separator]

Distinguished guests who had difficulty attending from various countries, high nobles of the capital, and court officials gathered in one place.

Casalin, who entered the hall where the reading was to be held, briefly looked around as she sat in her designated seat, guided by the knights.

Rose was standing in the center of the hall, preparing for the reading.

And Shalen was sitting in the front row, smiling contentedly as if very proud of her.

“His Majesty the Emperor is arriving.”

As Duke Ludwig spoke, the nobles gathered in the hall all bowed in greeting.

“Thank you all for attending. I am overjoyed to have prepared this wonderful occasion for the grand festival.”

“We feel the same, Your Majesty.”

Emperor Parnes, as he sat in the seat of honor, searched for someone with his eyes.

Casalin, who had been watching him freely from quite a distance, met his eyes directly.

“Well then, let’s begin without delay. Queen Litze, are you ready?”

“Yes. I’m ready.”

As Rose stepped onto the platform with light steps, Emperor Parnes slightly raised the corners of his mouth towards her.

One thing was certain, it could never be called a smile. If anything, it was closer to a wicked sneer.

“Then, I will begin the reading.”

Rose’s voice, somewhat childish for a queen of a nation, echoed loudly through the hall.

She read the text clearly in a confident voice for quite some time.

It was when she had read a little over half. Emperor Parnes suddenly tapped the table, making her stop.

Rose, who had been so focused on reading the script well in a clear voice that she hadn’t had time to observe the audience’s reaction, only then realized that the nobles were strangely restless.

“Is there a problem…”

“Hearing the argument that history repeats itself, I’ve become curious about something. Queen, would you mind if I ask a few questions?”

Rose’s eyes shook greatly.

Emperor Parnes spoke without giving her a chance.

“I’ve heard that the Kingdom of Kan has recently been struggling with food supply due to monsters raiding farms. I believe this happened once about 50 years ago as well, what do you think?”

Rose, unexpectedly questioned by the emperor, was so flustered that it was more uncomfortable for those watching. She sent a pleading look to Shalen sitting across from her.

Shalen, realizing that something was wrong with Rose’s text, quickly answered on behalf of his wife before the nobles could find it stranger.

“It seems the situation has been exaggerated in foreign countries. Compared to 50 years ago, the actual fatal damage is…”

“I’m terribly sorry, but I want to hear the answer from the Queen of Kan. She is the protagonist of today’s event, after all.”

Shalen opened his mouth but eventually closed it.

Indeed, the emperor had specifically directed the question to Rose, and it was clearly impolite for Shalen to answer instead.

In the quiet air, the guests held their breath, waiting only for the queen’s answer. Rose clenched her fists as if about to burst into tears and trembled her lips anxiously.

Her desperate gaze finally turned to Casalin.

‘Elder sister, what’s going on? Please help me.’

It seemed as if she was saying that, but unfortunately, there was no way to help her.

The emperor had just firmly stated that he wanted to hear the answer from none other than the queen.

And in fact, there was no need to be so troubled. The text she had read without any thought until now could have been smoothly proceeded without misunderstanding if she had added some explanations.

She had clearly given a warning. She even reminded her to review it carefully once more, saying she couldn’t completely guarantee that she had written a perfect text.

But it seemed Rose hadn’t even done that.

Judging by her expression, she didn’t seem to have thought about what the content meant even while reading it.

Casalin coldly ignored Rose’s desperate gaze and listened to the conversations of the nobles sitting in front, behind, and beside her.

“It’s not such a difficult question, why can’t she answer?”

“I know. Moreover, doesn’t the text seem strange somewhere? Logically there’s no problem, but it feels like the evidence is missing…”

As Rose’s silence grew unusually long, the guests began to whisper little by little.

Shalen closed his eyes tightly in dismay.

Emperor Parnes, who had been leisurely observing as if to see how long she would keep her mouth shut, finally opened his mouth when Rose’s face had turned red with shame.

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
