Rose granted the audience and instructed everyone to leave.

Then, she swiftly walked over and flung the door open, engulfed by an inexplicable feeling as if the stench from cracked floorboards seeped in.

A strange man stood there.

“Who…”

“Hello?”

Between his bushy beard, a glimpse of yellowed front teeth.

His relaxed and unpleasant smile seemed familiar somehow.

“The daughter I forgot about became Her Majesty the Queen. What a celebration.”

In that moment, she realized his smiling face resembled her own.

“The place looks killer.”

The strange man, who claimed to be a temporary gamekeeper, marveled at the luxurious furniture and vases in the room, touching them curiously.

Rose wanted to throw out this impertinent man who lacked manners, but an uneasy feeling made her hold back.

She watched him intently without blinking.

Feeling like she was missing something important, she said,

“You said you’re a temporary gamekeeper? Someone busy with their duties outside the palace, why are you here? I don’t see any reason to meet you, a stranger.”

“Why wouldn’t you need to meet me? Think about it. I know everything that happens in the hunting ground. And why did you send everyone away and rush to open the door as if you have a guilty conscience?”
Rose nearly lost her composure, trying her best to hide her true feelings.

But she couldn’t rashly respond, as she didn’t know what he knew, how much he knew, or his exact purpose.

“And I told you a moment ago. You are my daughter.”

“Talking nonsense. My father passed away a few years ago. He was a renowned scholar known throughout the Western Continent.”

“Hmm…”

The man leisurely admired the splendid room and suddenly clutched his stomach. A rumbling sound came from his belly.

Grinning widely, he said, “I’m hungry, bring me something to eat.”

“You’re insane. Stay there, I’m calling the guards.”

Just as Rose was about to ring the bell downstairs.

“Is your mother, Elizabeth, doing well?”

Her hand, reaching for the bell, stopped in mid-air as if blocked by an invisible wall.

Rose turned to look at the man with a pale face.

“How do you know my mother’s name…”

“Her nickname is Beth, her maiden name Grebet, from Saintfield, right? I can tell you more if you want. I know everything about her.”

“I asked how you know my mother!”

“Calm down, let’s have a meal and talk.”

Rose took a deep breath, rang the bell, and reluctantly ordered a meal.

Soon, a feast was laid out.

The man sat down quickly, unable to close his mouth in awe of the lavish spread.

“Royals and nobles have such abundant food and still complain?”

“Since I gave you what you wanted, you should answer my question. How do you know my mother? You didn’t do anything improper to her, did you?”

Rose still couldn’t accept that this man was her father. His face resembled hers, but she refused to acknowledge it.

Acknowledging it meant she’d fall from a noble’s daughter to a beggar’s.

She desperately ignored the truth at her feet, believing the man was spouting nonsense.

“Wow, this meat melts in the mouth.”

“Answer me!”

“Ahh, our queen is so hasty.”

Wiping his greasy mouth with his sleeve, he gulped down a glass of wine.

“How do I know? Nothing much. Just had a fling. Your mom was lonely, and I wanted a woman. We gave each other what we wanted. I’m quite good at it, you know?”

The man smirked vulgarly, making Rose feel nauseous.

“Anyway, that’s how you were conceived. But Elizabeth, that girl, dumped me and disappeared overnight. I suspected she married another man, but couldn’t find her. I only knew her nickname, Beth, back then.”

“Stop your nonsense. I am the daughter of Duke Robberfon. I don’t know you, a beggar licking the streets!”
“Do you not know? Then, can you still say you don’t know after seeing this?”

He took Rose and stood in front of a mirror.

Despite the vast gap in social status, the two people who strikingly resembled each other were clearly reflected beyond the cold mirror.

“Do you understand? Just because you turn away doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. The unchanging truth is that my blood flows within you.”

Call me Nelson. It seems we’ll be seeing each other often from now on.

He greeted her with a sly grin.

When scheming men desperately battle for her favor in the male harem

This one’s also on my reread list! The rivalry, scheming between the men in the imperial harem are just as intense and thrilling as in classic palace drama novels, where concubines fight to the death. Give it a read, girls! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Synopsis:

“I am not worthy of her… but I still want to be by her side, even if only as a loyal dog…”

Those were the painful whispers of Yue Guanyi – the proud Crown Prince of the Great Qi, who was torn between deep love and a guilty conscience. Despite holding the supreme power of the Imperial Guard, he still could not forget the dark past when he was sold into a brothel.

Fate played a cruel twist when Qiu Shuzhi – a young female official who had just passed the imperial examinations with top honors – stepped into his life. She did not know that she was the one who had saved him from a tragic fate many years ago. And now, her heart was the target of pursuit for both Yue Guanyi and the powerful Empress Dowager Qin Qing.

While Yue Guanyi only dared to silently care for and protect the one he loved from afar, the  Empress Dowager Qin Qing openly expressed his feelings and did not hesitate to take advantage of his power to approach Qiu Shuzhi. The covert struggle between the two most powerful forces in the imperial court began…
