“It’s ridiculous. There’s no rule that the chief maid must attend the first night…”

Kasalin’s mind flashed back to a distant memory. She remembered something casually mentioned by a court tutor during her queen lessons long ago.

The archbishops, priests, the king or queen’s chief maid and servants traditionally attend the first night unless there are exceptional circumstances. It’s a tradition to offer prayers of blessing to the gods during this sacred moment, signifying the dawn of a new era and praying for the prosperity of the royal family.

In the event of unforeseen difficulties for the inexperienced royal couple, they could indirectly advise or guide from behind.

Attending such an event was considered a great honor among nobles.

She had dismissed it as trivial during her lessons, never imagining she’d be in the position of a maid herself.

At a loss for words, Kasalin watched as Shalen commanded, “Everyone except those needed may leave.”

“Your Majesty, the royal laws clearly state that attendance can be waived in special cases.”

“I’ve explained sufficiently. You have a duty to perform as a maid. And where is your exception?”

Shalen, undoing the ties on his robe, paused and turned to her.

“You act as if being almost a queen once makes you special. You are merely my wife’s maid. Don’t forget your place.”

“Your Majesty!”

“It’s a sacred moment for the king and queen’s first union. Be silent and respectful.”

Shalen proceeded to the bed, his face emotionless and dry, too much so for a groom on his wedding night.

“The King and Queen should face each other and sit,” instructed the archbishop.

Shalen and Rose sat on the bed, closely embracing.

What followed was a series of unbearable scenes for Kasalin. She closed her eyes, unable to bear looking directly, feeling like she wanted to bite her tongue off.

“Look at me,” Shalen’s voice sounded.

Kasalin, lifting her head, caught sight of a heated man through the damask curtains around the bed.

He stared at her, unblinking, and continued to escalate until the very last moment, never taking his eyes off her.

Kasalin, finally free at midnight, fled the bridal chamber and rushed to the bathroom. She violently vomited, finally feeling mentally awake for the first time since the annulment.

She realized she had completely misjudged Shalen Liche. He wasn’t normal.

‘Shalen resents me. He brought me in as a maid to inflict pain, for losing the child that could have been a prince.’

Otherwise, his chilling gaze through the dark curtains made no sense.

Kasalin spent the night awake on the cold bathroom floor.

The seemingly endless night gave way to dawn, the pale sun fiercely illuminating the dew-soaked earth.
Shivering as if chilled to the bone from spending the night curled up on the cold floor, Kasalin felt that only by keeping her nerves sharp could she prevent herself from completely breaking down.

She washed away the tear stains from the previous night with cold water and changed into a modest but neat brown dress.

As she walked alone down the vast corridor to wake up the still-sleeping Rose, she saw a familiar figure approaching from the opposite end – it was Shalen.

“…….”

Like archenemies meeting on a narrow bridge, they both stopped walking, maintaining a distance. Shalen always had a way of looking down on people, even when wearing an expressionless face, and now was no different.

“Did you sleep well last night?”

He greeted her casually, as if implying that she should be pleased to receive his attention.

Under these circumstances, Kasalin didn’t want to act out her residual feelings of foolish anger or resentment toward him.

As a maid to the king, she merely nodded slightly in greeting, surprised at her ability to do so with the nightmare of the previous night still vivid in her mind.

“……It’s a bit strange. No need to be so formally polite all of a sudden. We’ve known each other for years, you can act as you used to when no one’s watching.”

“No, Your Majesty. As you said, I am now the maid to Her Majesty the Queen. I do not wish to be faulted, so I intend to observe court etiquette to the fullest.”

“You’re subtly sneering while pretending to be polite. That’s always been your way, hasn’t it? Smiling outwardly while speaking your mind.”

Shalen’s expression shifted as he didn’t receive the reaction he expected. He probably thought she would pour out resentful and angry words.

Sorry, but she’d been navigating the social circles for over a decade. She had no intention of showing her vulnerabilities in the guarded palace, especially not to him. The wounds he inflicted were too deep to be healed by mere outbursts of anger.

“Sneering? Surely not.”

“No. To me, you still seem filled with malice. Unable to accept and bless your only sister becoming the queen.”

Kasalin’s lips trembled slightly.

“I explained it sufficiently at the time. There were ‘legitimate’ reasons you couldn’t become queen.”

“And I suppose there were legitimate reasons why Rose had to become queen?”

When scheming men desperately battle for her favor in the male harem

This one’s also on my reread list! The rivalry, scheming between the men in the imperial harem are just as intense and thrilling as in classic palace drama novels, where concubines fight to the death. Give it a read, girls! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Synopsis:

“I am not worthy of her… but I still want to be by her side, even if only as a loyal dog…”

Those were the painful whispers of Yue Guanyi – the proud Crown Prince of the Great Qi, who was torn between deep love and a guilty conscience. Despite holding the supreme power of the Imperial Guard, he still could not forget the dark past when he was sold into a brothel.

Fate played a cruel twist when Qiu Shuzhi – a young female official who had just passed the imperial examinations with top honors – stepped into his life. She did not know that she was the one who had saved him from a tragic fate many years ago. And now, her heart was the target of pursuit for both Yue Guanyi and the powerful Empress Dowager Qin Qing.

While Yue Guanyi only dared to silently care for and protect the one he loved from afar, the  Empress Dowager Qin Qing openly expressed his feelings and did not hesitate to take advantage of his power to approach Qiu Shuzhi. The covert struggle between the two most powerful forces in the imperial court began…
