It was the hour of Mao (5–7 a.m.), before the morning dew had even dried.

A servant at Old Man Min’s estate swept the courtyard, heralding the start of a new day.

The servant had risen long before his master and was already busily moving about since early dawn.

The diligence of Old Man Min’s servants knew no distinction of age or gender—not even young children were exempt.

A boy of about seven years old carried a large basin filled with water toward the study.

Each time the boy swayed under the basin’s weight—too large and heavy for his small frame—the water inside sloshed uneasily.

—Splash.

As the study door opened, Old Man Min appeared.

Still groggy from sleep, he cleared his throat hoarsely and called out to the boy.

“Bring me wash water!”

His wide-open eyes exuded an eerie chill even at this early hour.

His tightly pressed, thin lips looked stubborn beyond measure.

The boy, intimidated by Old Man Min, placed the wash basin just inside the study door and quickly backed away.

He then headed to the kitchen where his mother was, to attend to his next task.

“Mother!”
