How Can a Soldier Be So Fair? (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 12
Although there had been a minor commotion that was somewhat embarrassing, it was already a stroke of incredible luck just to have gotten down from the rock unharmed.
That much was fine.
The next problem was moving the wild boar that Yeon Woo had hunted.
Even if it was only a subadult, the boar clearly weighed at least a hundred geun.
Yeon Woo grabbed a pair of the boar’s legs to drag the game away.
But only the legs she lifted flopped about uselessly—the body didn’t budge an inch.
Yeon Woo turned around, trying to sling the boar’s leg over her waist, kicking it, and pushing it—but nothing worked.
Geon silently watched from behind as Yeon Woo wrestled with the boar’s leg.
At first, he wondered what on earth she was trying to do, but soon realized she was attempting to move the boar.
“…….”
Watching Yeon Woo drenched in sweat, anyone might think she was locked in an epic battle with the boar’s leg.
Unable to watch any longer, Geon finally spoke up.
“Move aside.”
Geon stepped past Yeon Woo and walked toward the boar.
Then, without hesitation, he hoisted the boar onto his shoulder.
Even for a grown man, lifting such a heavy boar so effortlessly seemed impossible.
Yeon Woo stared at Geon with her mouth agape and said,
“Your strength is extraordinary. How can you lift it so easily?”
“You’re just weak.”
Just as Geon curtly replied and moved to walk away,
“Brother!”
Dae Bok appeared in the distance, returning while leading a horse.
He had gathered a full load of grass for the military horse and was coming back.
Though slightly tired, Dae Bok approached Yeon Woo with a proud expression.
“This horse must’ve seen some beast and got spooked for a moment. Your elder brother even cut all the grass for the horse, so make sure you show your gratitude… Huh!”
Only then did Dae Bok notice Geon beside Yeon Woo, and immediately offered a respectful bow, hiding his surprise.
“Good day, Prince Gwang Ho! I am trainee Lee Dae Bok!”
At Dae Bok’s formal greeting, Geon simply gave a brief nod to acknowledge him.
Seeing the boar slung over Geon’s shoulder, Dae Bok stepped forward to help.
“Oh! Why should you carry it, my lord? Please, hand it to me!”
Before Dae Bok even finished speaking, Geon promptly handed over the boar.
Now that a proper grown man had arrived, there was no need for him to carry it anymore.
But Dae Bok’s offer to carry it turned out to be pure bravado.
“I’ll carry it… Urgh!”
The moment he took the boar, Dae Bok collapsed, letting out an involuntary groan.
He had assumed that since Geon could shoulder it so easily, he could manage too—but clearly not.
Yeon Woo quietly approached Dae Bok and whispered,
“Why don’t we just load it onto the horse instead?”
“I didn’t think of that. You’re unusually clever today, little brother.”
“It’s just that you’re a bit slow-witted.”
“Oh really? Look at how you’re talking to your elder brother who cut grass for you!”
“If you hadn’t left me behind earlier, I almost got killed by the boar!”
Geon watched Yeon Woo and Dae Bok silently.
No matter how he looked at it, he couldn’t imagine those two frail-looking individuals managing to move the boar.
Yeon Woo and Dae Bok strained together, grunting as they tried to hoist the boar onto the horse—but it was clearly too much for them.
Finding the sight frustrating, Geon stepped in again and loaded the boar onto the horse himself.
Only then could the three finally head back toward their unit.
On their way back, Dae Bok alternated between glancing at Geon and the boar, then spoke admiringly.
“By the way, that’s incredible. Did you catch this boar yourself, my lord?”
In response to Dae Bok’s question, Geon jerked his chin toward Yeon Woo.
Trending
“That trainee caught it.”
“What? Really?”
Wide-eyed with astonishment, Dae Bok quickly turned to Yeon Woo beside him and whispered quietly,
“You caught the boar, little brother? For real? How?”
Overwhelmed by Dae Bok’s barrage of questions, Yeon Woo simply pointed to the bow she was carrying.
“I shot it with this bow.”
Dae Bok stared at Yeon Woo, eyes wide in disbelief.
“Wow. You’re amazing, little brother—I’m seeing you in a whole new light.”
“Didn’t you know? I’m just that impressive.”
Puffed up with pride from Dae Bok’s praise, Yeon Woo’s shoulders practically scraped the sky.
Geon, having unintentionally overheard their hushed conversation, was utterly dumbfounded.
Just moments ago, she couldn’t even get down from a simple rock properly—yet she strutted around so boastfully.
Dae Bok, who couldn’t even lift the boar properly, was one thing—but that pale, frail-looking trainee Hong Yeon Woo seemed even less reliable.
With such a tiny frame, she looked as if a light tap would knock her over. It was doubtful whether she could even knock down an enemy properly.
Having such weak trainees as soldiers was unthinkable in Prince Gwang Ho’s unit.
Geon walked on, pondering how to deal with those fragile soldiers.
Training Officer’s barracks of Prince Gwang Ho’s unit.
Bi Young was writing in the training log when the cook soldier—assigned to prepare meals in the barracks—entered his tent.
The cook placed a plate of cooked boar trotters in front of Bi Young.
Pleased by the rare fatty meal, Bi Young was surprised by the unusually large portion.
“The portion is considerably bigger than usual.”
“Well, apparently a trainee brought in a wild boar this morning! There’s enough to feed the whole unit with leftovers to spare.”
“A single trainee managed to catch something even groups find dangerous?”
“Yes, that’s exactly what they said. And do you know how the boar was caught?”
The cook, just as delighted by the fatty meal as Bi Young, excitedly chattered on.
Anyone watching might mistake him for a storyteller rather than a cook.
“They say it was brought down with just a single arrow.”
“A single arrow?”
“Yes—straight into the vital spot with one shot.”
The cook pointed to his brow as he spoke.
Facing a wild boar was so perilous that even several strong men charging together could suffer serious injuries—or worse, lose their lives.
It was astonishing that someone had even conceived the idea of hunting a boar with just a bow.
Whoever that trainee was, they clearly had more than one life.
Catching a boar like that was either bold or reckless—either way, it was extremely dangerous.
But bringing down a boar with a single arrow clearly meant the trainee’s skill was far from ordinary.
“That could’ve ended very badly. What a bold—and reckless—trainee. What’s that trainee’s name?”
Bi Young decided he should remember the name of the trainee who caught the boar and consider promoting them to cavalry.
At Bi Young’s question, the cook quickly answered.
“A trainee named Hong Yeon Woo.”
“!”
At that instant, the trotter on Bi Young’s chopsticks dropped straight to the ground.
The cook clicked his tongue regretfully—it hadn’t even been tasted yet.
Bi Young doubted his own ears.
“…Did you just say ‘Hong Yeon Woo’?”
“Yes, that’s right—Hong Yeon Woo. A short, frail-looking fellow. I thought someone so tiny couldn’t possibly be strong, but it seems they’ve got unexpected talents.”
Among all the trainees, there was only one Hong Yeon Woo.
He had asked her repeatedly not to take any risks.
Shot a boar with just a bow? And all by herself?
Bi Young’s head spun, and he shot up from his seat.
When Bi Young stood up abruptly, the cook hurriedly spoke.

“I’ll bring you a fresh plate of trotters! Please, Training Officer, sit back down!”
“No. I have other matters to attend to—I’ll take this with me while I’m on my way.”
Urged to check on Yeon Woo’s safety immediately, Bi Young quickly strode out of the training officer’s barracks.
Just as Bi Young set out to find Yeon Woo, he ran into Geon passing by.
Geon, seeming to have something to say, approached and spoke to Bi Young.
“How is the training of the trainees progressing?”
“We’re conducting basic training. I plan to assign positions suited to each trainee’s abilities.”
Geon was as curt as ever.
However, unlike usual, he was showing interest in the trainees’ training.
“Understood. Double the training intensity for all trainees.”
“Yes, sir.”
Bi Young responded crisply to Geon’s order.
Increasing training intensity wasn’t a problem.
But Bi Young wondered why someone who had never shown interest before was suddenly concerned about the soldiers.
Geon’s order to intensify training stemmed from seeing Yeon Woo and Dae Bok wobble helplessly under the boar’s corpse—but Bi Young had no way of knowing that.
Then, an unexpected name slipped from Geon’s lips.
“I’ve heard there’s a trainee named Hong Yeon Woo.”
—Thud!
Bi Young’s heart sank.
Hearing Yeon Woo’s name from Geon’s mouth filled him with suffocating anxiety.
Boar trotters, Prince Gwang Ho—it all vanished from Bi Young’s mind, replaced entirely by Yeon Woo’s name.
What trouble had she caused this time?
For someone who never cared about soldiers to mention a trainee by name—Bi Young felt a sense of foreboding.
Carefully hiding his unease, Bi Young calmly asked Geon,
“Yes. Is there a problem?”
Bi Young stared intently at Geon’s lips, anxious about what words would come next.
Though Geon found Yeon Woo’s archery skill decent, he knew one couldn’t rely solely on a bow in battle.
Sometimes one had to wield a sword; sometimes one had to fight hand-to-hand.
To do that effectively required the sturdy physique and stamina necessary to hold one’s ground in combat.
Geon thought Yeon Woo’s small frame and weak constitution needed significant strengthening.
“She appears smaller and weaker than the other soldiers.”
While stamina could be improved, the inherent physical differences between men and women were unchangeable—and since Geon didn’t know Yeon Woo was female, he couldn’t understand that disparity.
“Make sure she undergoes double the training specifically.”
Geon’s attention toward Yeon Woo weighed heavily on Bi Young’s shoulders.
Why would the person with the least connection to Yeon Woo show such intense interest?
Because of Yeon Woo, Bi Young was having an emotionally turbulent day.
After a day full of incidents, Yeon Woo entered her private barracks to prepare for bed.
Just as she was about to drift off to sleep, she heard movement outside.
“Yeon Woo, are you asleep?”
It was Bi Young’s voice.
“No, I’m still awake.”
“May I come in?”
“Yes, please do.”
At Yeon Woo’s reply, Bi Young immediately stepped inside.
Normally, he would have summoned Yeon Woo to the training officer’s barracks.
But since Bi Young had come personally to her tent, it must be urgent.
As Bi Young entered, his large frame filled Yeon Woo’s small barracks.
“What’s the matter?”
“I heard you were the trainee who caught the boar.”
“Oh….”

Yeon Woo already had a good guess why Bi Young had come looking for her.
Bi Young’s voice was heavy with worry as he let out a deep sigh before continuing.
“Why do you always give me such shocks? Didn’t you promise not to dive into dangerous situations? When you see a boar, you run—why on earth did you aim your bow at it?”
“It all happened so suddenly—I didn’t have any other option.”
Bi Young couldn’t understand why trouble followed Yeon Woo wherever she went.
Though he’d vowed to protect her, he kept missing the moments when she needed him most.
Yet he couldn’t possibly keep her glued to his side all the time.
Half-resigned, Bi Young instructed Yeon Woo,
“This time you were just lucky. Next time, avoid it.”
“Yes, I will, older brother.”
After causing him so much worry, Yeon Woo couldn’t possibly say “don’t worry.”
She herself didn’t understand why she kept breaking promises made to Bi Young.
Then Bi Young brought up another concern.
“…Did something happen between you and Prince Gwang Ho?”
“P-Prince Gwang Ho? Why do you ask?”
Hearing that name instantly snapped Yeon Woo to full alertness.
She already sensed something ominous.
“His lordship issued a special order to intensify training for all trainees—and they’ll even be tested.”
“What does that have to do with me…?”
Yeon Woo, unable to grasp how increasing general training intensity related to her, asked.
“He specifically named you to receive double training.”
“What?! Me?!”
Yeon Woo was startled by Bi Young’s words.
“Yes. He’s someone who never cared about soldiers before. You didn’t do something serious, did you? Otherwise, he’s not the type to get personally involved.”
“N-no, nothing like that happened.”
No matter how hard she thought, she couldn’t recall doing anything wrong.
She’d certainly brushed off their earlier gossip as trivial, and he didn’t seem like someone to hold a grudge now.
“Anyway, he said trainees who fail the test will receive special punishment.”
“What kind of punishment?”
“I don’t know myself.”
Just hearing the word “punishment” sent chills down Yeon Woo’s spine.
After all, the only punishments that man knew were burying people alive or beheading them.
Then Bi Young called Yeon Woo’s name in a voice weighed down by gravity.
“Yeon Woo.”
“Yes, older brother.”
“You know I care about you, don’t you?”
“Of course.”
“I don’t want you to suffer punishment.”
“I don’t want that either.”
She was already terrified of him—and the thought of falling out of his favor was too dreadful to even imagine.
But Bi Young’s unusually serious preface filled Yeon Woo with unease.
“Yeon Woo.”
“Yes?”
Bi Young, who called her name, stared into her eyes with a solemnity she’d never seen before.
“Starting tomorrow—you undergo special training.”
Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away
This is also on my reread list!
This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.
Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.
But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.
Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.
I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.
The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.
As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
