Having seen his colleague taken down by Yeon-woo, he approached more cautiously.

As he swung his long arms to grab her, Yeon-woo quickly ducked.

The man’s arms flailed aimlessly in the air. Seizing the moment, Yeon-woo sprung up, attacking his chin.

“Krgh!”

Struck on the chin by Yeon-woo, the man clutched his jaw and fell backward.

Just as she tried to escape, a rough hand grabbed her arm. It belonged to a bear-like, large man.

“Got you.”

“Let go!”

Yeon-woo kicked the large man’s shin, but he didn’t flinch.

“Annoying girl.”

Seemingly irritated by her struggle, he grabbed her other arm too, immobilizing her. During the struggle, one of Yeon-woo’s shoes fell off.

Then, Bae Young-gam spoke up.

“It’s useless no matter how hard you try. How can you handle a man who even strong men can’t beat?”

At some point, the two men Yeon-woo had dealt with also got up and prepared themselves.

Bae Young-gam, hands behind his back, spoke leisurely.

“Don’t waste your energy and come along quietly.”

“I refuse! Let me go!”

“Seems like you don’t understand when spoken to. Drag her!”

At Young-gam’s command, the large man started dragging Yeon-woo away forcibly. Despite her struggles, it was futile. The man’s strength was too overpowering, and the other two men kept a watchful eye on her.

“Let go! Can’t you let go?!”
Struggling was futile for Yeon-woo. The man’s strength was overpowering, and the hairy man and the weasel-like man flanked her, watching closely.

“Let go! Can’t you let go?!”

Yeon-woo continued to resist while being dragged away. She tried kicking the large man and even bit at his hand, but it was all in vain.

The man, annoyed by Yeon-woo’s struggles, asked Bae Young-gam, “She’s struggling too much, what should I do?”

“Do I need to tell you everything?” Bae Young-gam responded irritably.

“Then I’ll use some force.”

The large man took out a rope he had prepared.

Just as he was about to tie up Yeon-woo to immobilize her, a deep and heavy voice commanded from behind, “Put that hand down.”

As they turned, they saw a man who had just arrived.

Yeon-woo, relieved to see him, called out, “Sir!”

Kwon Ki Joo, who had caught up with the group, stood there. At Yeon-woo’s call, his gaze shifted to her. Seeing her forcibly held, his eyes quickly turned fierce.

The atmosphere grew ice-cold as Kwon Ki Joo’s gaze fixed on the large man holding Yeon-woo.

Despite his size, the man flinched under Kwon Ki Joo’s intimidating stare.

“I’ve seen many fights, but never someone who could subdue me so easily,” thought the large man. He hadn’t even noticed Kwon Ki Joo approaching.

Bae Young-gam, alternating his gaze between Kwon Ki Joo and Yeon-woo, pointed accusingly, “You, you! With your gigolo-like appearance, I recognize you. You’re the one I saw earlier.”

“Do you know me?” Kwon Ki Joo asked, raising an eyebrow menacingly, which intimidated Bae Young-gam.

Despite having three young, strong men, including the large man who was reputed in fighting, Bae Young-gam felt confident in front of Kwon Ki Joo.

“You know who I am. You’ve been flirting with my bride-to-be.”

At the mention of ‘bride-to-be,’ Kwon Ki Joo turned his gaze to Yeon-woo and asked as if to confirm, “Is this corpse your husband?”

“Absolutely not! This corpse is just being delusional!” Yeon-woo strongly denied any connection with Bae Young-gam.

“What, corpse?!” Bae Young-gam jumped up in anger.

But Kwon Ki Joo’s stern gaze made Bae Young-gam flinch with its overwhelming presence.

“Release her,” Kwon Ki Joo demanded menacingly.

“These young ones today just don’t listen. What are you waiting for? Get rid of him!” Bae Young-gam yelled.

The weasel-like and hairy men charged at Kwon Ki Joo. He deftly moved past them and struck the back of their necks with the sheath of his sword.

“Ugh!”

“Ugh!”

They both fell, incapacitated by his swift actions.
The two men struck in their vital spots fell instantly.

Kwon Ki Joo swiftly turned and charged at the large man. Just as he was about to swing his scabbard, the large man grasped it with his hand, warning him with fierce eyes.

“Let’s not make this ugly. Back off now, it’s none of your business.”

The man was towering and muscular, making Kwon Ki Joo look ordinary beside him. But Kwon Ki Joo was not intimidated. He twisted his lips into a sneer.

“I admire your courage.”

With that, Kwon Ki Joo headbutted the man’s face.

“Ugh!”

The man staggered back, nose bleeding, freeing Yeon-woo, who quickly hid behind Kwon Ki Joo.

Checking that Yeon-woo was safe, Kwon Ki Joo lunged again at the man. His body momentarily suspended in air, Kwon Ki Joo’s agile movement allowed him to smack the man’s ear with his foot.

Despite his size, the man crumpled helplessly to the ground.

Turning to face Bae Young-gam, Kwon Ki Joo saw him retreat cautiously. Bae Young-gam hadn’t expected his hired fighters to be easily defeated. Facing Kwon Ki Joo himself was out of the question.

As Kwon Ki Joo unsheathed his sword, the chilling sound echoed.

Stepping closer to Bae Young-gam, his menacing presence froze him in place.

Kwon Ki Joo swung his sword at Bae Young-gam’s head.

“Eek!”

A horrified scream escaped as Bae Young-gam’s topknot and black hair floated down. Losing hair, a gift from one’s parents, was considered the utmost disrespect.

Bae Young-gam, distraught, scrambled to collect his hair, lying prostrate on the ground.

Kwon Ki Joo spoke softly, “I’ll count to five.”

“What?”

“Disappear from my sight by five, or next time I’ll aim for your neck.”

“Eek!”

“One.”

As Kwon Ki Joo counted, Bae Young-gam bolted, quickly disappearing from sight.

Kwon Ki Joo insisted on escorting Yeon-woo, fearing Bae Young-gam’s men might reappear.

Initially, Yeon-woo refused, fearing revealing her address would expose her identity. However, recalling her near abduction, she agreed to be escorted but only near her house.

Upon arrival, Yeon-woo bowed in gratitude.

“This is far enough, thank you.”

Kwon Ki Joo nodded and pulled out a red hair ribbon, offering it to her.

Yeon-woo looked at it in surprise.
“This is…!”

“I wasn’t sure when I could return it, so I always kept it with me.”

“But I didn’t give it expecting to get it back…”

Yeon-woo hadn’t expected to get the ribbon back and was surprised to receive it.

“Thank you. How’s the wound from that time?”

“It healed, thanks to you.”

Kwon Ki Joo seemed fine when Yeon-woo saw him at the Kwangho Army camp, and after witnessing the recent fight, it was clear he had fully recovered.

“That’s a relief.”

Yeon-woo smiled gently, her smile lingering in Kwon Ki Joo’s heart like a soft cloud.

Feeling an unfamiliar emotion that wasn’t unpleasant, Kwon Ki Joo thought of Yeon-woo, who had stayed in his mind since their first encounter at Baekaksan. She was as beautiful as a blooming flower and warm like the spring sun.

Kwon Ki Joo felt a pang of sorrow at parting with Yeon-woo, whom he had thought he might never meet again.

He looked at her intently, struggling to part his lips.

“May I hope for a next time?”

Yeon-woo paused, thinking. The day that could have been her worst holiday was salvaged by meeting Kwon Ki Joo. But continuing to meet him as a woman would risk exposing her disguise.

“…If fate allows, we may meet again.”

Kwon Ki Joo’s heart ached; her words sounded like a barrier between them.

Knowing when to step back, Kwon Ki Joo prepared for a reluctant farewell.

“You said your name was Hong Yeon-ho?”

“Yes.”

Kwon Ki Joo looked at the beautiful woman before him.

“Take care on your way.”

“You too, be careful.”

As Kwon Ki Joo turned to leave, Yeon-woo watched his receding figure.

Then she looked at the red ribbon in her hand. It was as if it had been carefully preserved, clean and neatly folded, unlike his rough demeanor.

The ribbon seemed to hold Kwon Ki Joo’s scent, a mix of refreshing pine and musky skin. Yeon-woo brought it close, and the scent filled her senses, spreading through the air and into her heart.
