On the day the Fourth Prince departed the Imperial Capital, the grand main gate of the palace stood wide open. Before it stood the knights Adrian had promised to the Fourth Prince, lined up in formation.
These knights were the men the Fourth Prince would take with him as he paid his final respects to the Emperor before leaving for the south.
Adrian left the knights behind and went first into the palace, where he met Frederick Rains, the Emperor of Harkin.
The Emperor, who had thus far remained aloof and passive regarding the Fourth Prince’s matter, gave Adrian a brief glance when he entered the imperial office and let slip a short remark.
“You are quite spiteful.”
“If you disliked it so much, why didn’t you step in and mediate at any point?”
At Adrian’s retort—that the Emperor had ultimately shown tacit approval of his actions—the Emperor scoffed. He stepped out from behind his desk and stood before his son.
Adrian, unable to bring himself to look down at his father—who now stood subtly shorter than him—fixed his gaze straight ahead instead.
As their eyes gently met and parted, Frederick lightly patted his son’s shoulders.
“This matter turned out well, luckily, but don’t overdo it. Why would you willingly expose your weakness?”
“I hadn’t realized His Majesty’s hearing had grown so dull that even news from the Crown Prince’s residence slips past unnoticed.”
“What nonsense are you spouting?”
“Laila isn’t my weakness—she’s the weakness of those who would attack me. I assumed His Majesty wasn’t so dull as to fail at blocking attacks coming only from one side.”
The Emperor dismissed Adrian’s sophistry with just one sentence.
“Marry.”
