Adrian passed by Brian and headed toward the bow of the ship to disembark when he happened to see Laila being dragged out of the cargo hold by someone.

He felt Laila’s fleeting glance toward him. Yet, after initiating it herself, she was the one who quickly turned her head away first.

Days aboard the ship had completely erased the regal bearing of Laila, once a princess, leaving her looking gaunt and worn.

In the dark, the illusion had held somewhat, but now in the bright light, Laila’s appearance was quite shocking.

Adrian briefly followed the sight of Laila walking barefoot, her feet blackened with grime and without shoes, before turning away.

He simply couldn’t bear to look any longer at Laila in such a state.

After disembarking, he forced a smile—however strained—toward the Harkin citizens who came to welcome him, then climbed into the waiting carriage and let out a long sigh.

He’d been aboard the ship too long; standing on solid ground felt strangely unfamiliar. Moreover, his condition had never fully recovered since collapsing days earlier.

The moment he let his guard down, the forgotten pain returned, prompting him to sink wearily against the carriage seat—just as his aide, Rilvan, climbed in after him.

Seated across from Adrian, Rilvan studied his expression a moment before relaying the latest news he’d just received.

“It seems Filmer’s bankruptcy is imminent, just as Your Highness intended.”

“Is that so? Still, it happened faster than I expected.”

“Thanks to the massive debts you’ve piled onto the First and Seventh Princes—and, as you ordered, we’ve also withdrawn as much Harkin currency circulating within Filmer as possible.”

Leaning against the slowly moving carriage, Adrian let out a quiet, derisive snort.
