It was two hours before the engagement ceremony.

“I’m so relieved. I was terribly worried, wondering what had happened to Your Highness.”

The carriage sent by the royal family arrived at Millay’s residence right on time—with Laila’s maid in tow.

After breakfast, Laila had been led by Millay’s hand to choose a dress, and naturally assumed she would ride to the palace in Millay’s carriage. Thus, she hesitated momentarily upon seeing the carriage emblazoned with Pilmer’s royal crest.

However, when her own maid burst out from the carriage, tearfully sobbing, Laila comforted her and climbed aboard.

From what she gathered, Millay had apparently informed the palace in advance that she was here—spinning a plausible story, of course.

He certainly had talent. Millay seemed like the kind of man whose lies were impeccably convincing, no matter how one looked at him.

Laila, watching her maid still dabbing tears with a handkerchief, asked tentatively,

“So…? Did they miss me much at the palace?”

The maid nodded vigorously.

“Yes! Prince Reynald even returned to the palace to search for Your Highness and suffered a serious injury!”

“A serious injury?”

“He tumbled down the stairs—the court physician says he fractured some ribs…”

Having experienced twice already that Reynald didn’t hold her in such high regard, Laila remained skeptical even upon hearing he’d returned to look for her. Besides, how could a fall down the stairs possibly break ribs?

She suspected he might have conspired with the court physician to fabricate this lie. Knowing him, it was entirely plausible.
