It’s hard to imagine what Adrian couldn’t do, but over the past few days, spending every moment with him, Laila had come to realize one more thing about him.

He possessed far more trivia than she’d expected, and he seemed to know the rival kingdom of Fitzroy as thoroughly as if he’d researched it himself.

Well, he probably actually had. After all, he wasn’t the kind of person who’d fight an enemy he didn’t understand.

“My lady, it’s time to depart for the Count’s estate.”

The elderly butler’s voice called out. Just as Laila finished her makeup, she rose from her seat and turned around.

The golden hair typical of a baroness here rippled gently. Laila awkwardly swept the curls—far more tangled than her natural hair—behind her ears and opened the door.

There stood the kindly-faced butler, bowing deeply to her.

Laila gave a soft, round smile.

“The carriage is already waiting out front?”

“Yes, my lady. Her Ladyship is also awaiting you.”

Laila nodded and, clutching the swaying hem of her skirt, descended to the lower floor.

She had taken Adrian’s suggestion to wear a dress in a subdued color and chosen a deep green one, which pleased her more than she’d anticipated.

Following the butler’s lead, she stepped outside and indeed saw a carriage waiting at the gate, just as he’d said.

Like the occasional carriages she’d ridden before, this one—driven by an unfamiliar coachman—was still clearly of noble caliber, respectable enough not to bring shame upon its owner.

But the person who ought to have been waiting there was nowhere in sight.
