The moment the door opened, unfamiliar faces greeted her with bright smiles. Clearly, relief was what shone upon their expressions.

“We were starting to worry something had gone wrong since you arrived so late.”

The couple the count had arranged to meet them were indeed a married pair, just as previously described. They said they’d already been here since the day before.

They were originally meant to meet at noon today, but given that it was nearly midnight now, their opening remark made perfect sense.

Though she’d never seen them before, she would soon need to impersonate them. Laila explained the situation while silently reminding herself that these people belonged to the count and were therefore trustworthy.

“We were being followed during the day. They simply wouldn’t let up, which is why it took us so long to get here.”

Rilvan, who had been listening behind her, subtly asked Brian,

“Were they so persistent that you couldn’t shake them off at all?”

“It wasn’t just persistence—they had unusually large numbers for a surveillance team. We confirmed around ten individuals at the very least.”

Laila was slightly startled to hear “ten.” She hadn’t been told about the number before; it was likely Brian had deliberately omitted that detail for her sake.

Her eyes widened as she reacted to Brian’s words.

“I had no idea it was that many.”

Brian smiled faintly before turning to Rilvan.

“Nonetheless, it was Lady Laila’s decision that brought us back to the count’s residence.”

At that, Rilvan stared blankly at Laila. Knowing he didn’t usually trust her much, she found herself tensing involuntarily, unsure what he might say next.
